About the Item

Old School House, Original Realist Cityscape Painting, 2013 32" x 40" x 1.5" (HxWxD) Oil on Canvas The sun streaks in across the old New England buildings as they stand out in contrast against the bright blue sky. Two vintage cars sit in the parking lot, their owners likely inside the old school house. The realism in this work puts the viewer into the scene, as if they too could walk building's the fire escape that empties out into the parking lot in this urban landscape. Artist Commentary: This is another of the Bangor series. This scene is of an old school house that has been converted into apartments. The cars in the foreground were actually minivans, but I thought the picture's story would be told better if plugged in cars that could still be on the road when the school was actually a school. A way of creating that sense of frozen time. About the Artist: Ben Ferry is a former high school and college all-American soccer player who grew up in Washington, D.C.. After being drafted by "D.C. United", he played professionally for three years before a major spinal injury forced him to retire. In his work, Ben focuses on the human figure, landscapes, cityscapes, and animals in a variety of media and styles. His paintings are vibrant, playful and unconventional, often featuring bright, saturated color and imaginative subject matter. Ben received both his B.A. and M.F.A. in painting and drawing from George Washington University and still lives in D.C., where he teaches painting and drawing at Georgetown University and George Mason University.

Welcome in New England
By Marion Buricatu
Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary: I started a series of paintings of places in the town I live in: Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. In many New England small towns, the most important buildings are the white protestant churches in the commons. In Shrewsbury, this church is called “the First Congregational Church”. So it made sense to start my painting collection with this church. My fellow painters told me that New England churches have been painted millions of times, and that it could be a boring subject. However, I was struck by the beauty in these churches. Coming from the French Loire Valley where winters are grey and rainy, I loved the crisp, blue sky of New England in winter and the way the church and the snow shared the same pearly white color. Compared to where I come from, churches are instead made of yellow ochre stone and snow is very rare. Overall, I just started to paint what was different for me. Even though my paintings of New England...
