About the Item

A cache of handwritten letters, stamped, and torn open creates a nostalgic composition in this realistic oil painting by Ciba Karisik. Known for his masterful use of fine details and his trompe l’oeil technique (fool the eye), Karisik has elevated the importance of this subject by using strong tonal contrasts between light and dark. The letters are rendered in blues, lilac, white and golden yellow against a dark background. In a digital world, the letter—‘scripsit’ or ‘written by’ reminds us of how much our means of communication have changed. “I would like the viewer to pause, consider, and behold timeless objects that keep our memories and communicate messages across time.” Ciba Karisik Ciba Karisik completed a bachelor’s degree in 1985 and a master’s in painting at the Sarajevo Academy of Fine Art. In 1992, Karisik immigrated to Canada where he continued his career. Since then, he has produced a significant body of work and exhibited regularly in solo and group exhibitions. His paintings are held in international corporate and private collections including those of Brian Mulroney, Alex Trebek, Martin Short, Martha Stewart and U2’s Bono.

Romanee Conti - rustic, vivid detail, realist, food, still-life oil on canvas
By Ciba Karisik
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Wine connoisseurs treasure this wine - a 1960 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti La Tache Grand Cru Monopole, cote de Nuits, France. This still life of the bottle celebrates a wine that is presently trading for around $3000 US a bottle. Any wine cellar would be happy to make room for it. Classically trained, this painter is capable of rendering humble objects in extraordinary and riveting detail. A single wine bottle becomes an object of contemplation, or possibly desire. Ciba Karisik was born in Sarajevo in 1959. As a grandson of two artists, he revealed his creative inheritance at an early age. Invited to attend the Sarajevo Academy of Fine Art, Ciba completed his Bachelor and then his Master’s Degree in painting in 1985. Already an established artist, the subsequent war in the early 90's played havoc to this artist's life forcing him to eventually abandon his homeland to immigrate with his family to Canada. For Ciba, his world of painting reflects a philosophy characterized by a profound appreciation for the simple things life has to offer. Objects, interiors, and landscapes are recreated in detail sustained by a quiet mood of reflection. Often using a well trained ability in the trompe l'oeil technique, the artist sharpens his images to increase the tension of memory. Since 1996, Ciba Karisik has produced a steady body of work exhibiting in solo and group exhibitions every year. His paintings have been collected in Canada, the US, England and Europe. This is realistic portrait of a wine bottle aged to perfection. Romanée-Conti has been called one of the greatest wines of the world...
