Contemporary landscape painter David Konigsberg is well known for his conceptual landscapes that come alive in the space where earth and sky meet. Dramatic backdrops of tumultuous clouds above gesturally painted fields, informed by years of living in the upper Hudson Valley, provide a stage for factual and whimsical subject matter like flying space pods, whirling tornados, or quaint country barns. A new series of paintings called "Fragments of the Inhabited Landscapes" features a diverse selection of small oil paintings and hand tinted monotypes on wood panel that highlight the elements comprising our landscape; this includes the flowers the grow from the ground, the houses built in the fields, the humans that ponder the world's beauty, and the planes that fly overhead. This small painting of clouds is a gem, a typical composition for this artist who mostly paints in grand scale. Billowy warm, white clouds span a dusty blue sky, with no horizon light in sight. With this series, you can own a small part of the artist's whimsical aesthetic!
About the artist and work:
David Konigsberg shares a renewed reverence for his surroundings in the Hudson Valley, where he has made his home for the past four years. Known for a conceptual realism that has, in the past, used landscape as a backdrop—and everything from angels to fantastical flying machines as characters and metaphors—with this series the artist moves the backdrop forward, in paintings that are more frankly personal and quietly revealing. An avid hiker, Konigsberg draws from long walks in farm country and frequent climbs among the peaks of the nearby Catskills and Taconics. Still, while his references are specific to the region, these paintings transcend location to enter a realm that is tranquil, deeply spiritual and universal.
Beyond subject matter, the magic of the work can be found in Konigsberg’s handling of paint, in both the gestural brushwork that propels his characters and the use of layers to create illusions—for example, of haze or morning mist in an environment filled with atmospheric drama.
David Konigsberg is a conceptual realist who works across media and painting genres to portray transitional spaces, metaphoric moments and alternative histories. A long-time member of the Gowanus and Red Hook artist communities in Brooklyn, he is now based in Hudson and employs the area's landscapes as the setting and sometimes subject of his work.
The artist’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and has been featured in The New York Times, Chronogram and Brooklyn Journal and numerous art and culture blogs. David Konigsberg lives and works in Hudson, New York.

- City Glow: Cityscape Oil Painting of New York City in Pastel PaletteBy Patty NealLocated in Hudson, NYContemporary cityscape painting of New York City skyline with a light blue and green palette “City Glow”, painted by Patty Neal in 2019 18 x 18 inches on wood panel Wire backing, artist signature located in lower right corner This contemporary oil painting depicting a metropolitan view of New York City was painted by Brooklyn based artist, Patty Neal. Made with gestural impressionistic brushstrokes, this painting offers a view of the Manhattan skyline on a bridge through the window of a passing car. The mint green infastructure compliments the dusty blue and sandy oranges of the city in the background. This piece is traditional of Neal’s work which commonly highlights everyday city scenes, utilitarian infrastructure, and industrial or electrical apparatus. The cityscape scene is completed on wood panel with white painted sides. Artist statement: A life is an accumulation of experiences: visual, emotional and mental. By compartmentalizing these snippets of life we create boundaries. The focus of my work for many years has been the exploration of these various life aspects and how they are bound together or bound from each other. My process is often literally composed of boundaries. I make a painting by putting together multiple panels, or I segment a single panel into separate visual spaces. The works are made up of pieces or elements of city and landscape. While exploring the concepts of boundaries I play with visual “reality.” Sometimes I combine images that are upside down with those that are not and juxtapose images from different contexts. Literal boundaries, such as walls fences, expanses of water and highway median strips are also used. My intent is to invite viewers to look beyond these boundaries to see the possibilities of a connected whole.
