Casket with Pears- 21st Century Contemporary Still-life Painting

2018

About the Item

This still-life is made by Dutch painter Erik Zwaga. The painter started in the style of the romantic school, Erik Zwaga began to search more and more for his own visual language. That has been a rather difficult process. After an abstract period of ten years, the artist returned to realistic work in 2011. The peace that Zwaga saw in still lifes matched well with what he wanted to show, but his search for individuality also continued in his still life. Erik Zwaga tells: I now make a connection between the peace and quiet of the object and the tension of the environment. I use techniques that I have learned in my abstract period. These are particularly visible in the backgrounds. I want to increase the tension in my paintings by using 'Claire Obscure' effects and by working in shades of gray and on earth. Through details that are presented more by means of structures, I create a warm atmosphere environment that I find more important than the precise representation of reality. I also make a synthesis between the more classic objects and everyday things that I find in the barn or at my home. The artist ends by saying that he does not know where the search will end. but by continuing to develop and keep searching, he does what is probably best suited to his character, because as soon as he thinks he has found it, something new and the search continues ....

This painting was inspired by the artists very first toy, a small blue giraffe, given to her as a day-old baby. It is something that has been around her whole life, and even though it is inanimate, there is a feeling of personification through the years of wear. Her brother as a baby would call giraffes “fa,” which is always a sweet memory she associate with this toy. Samantha Van Heest...
