About the Item
This contemporary abstract painting was inspired by nature and features a moon.
Vancouver-based artist Fiona Ackerman has often turned to the beauty of the natural world as a source of inspiration. This is one of a series of paintings called ‘Glasslands’ that she created to explore the idea of the dual nature of the garden—at once a reflection of nature and the artificial. This concept of a garden called Heterotopia (a world within worlds), where the ‘wildness’ of a garden is controlled, was discussed by Michel Foucault, a famous 20th-century French philosopher and historian. In this painting, graphic and organic shapes--the moon, and various plants create a dynamic composition in a vivid palette of red, purple, green, blue-gray and black and white.
“These 26 paintings emerged from a process of exploration beginning with pieces of painted paper cut in shapes of foliage, placed inside a mirror box (hence, glass-land). The resulting three-dimensional mirrored images shatter, amplify and disrupt conventional views of nature rendered on a flat surface, giving rise to lush compositions with depth and unexpected juxtapositions.” Fiona Ackerman
Fiona Ackerman was born in Ottawa in 1978. She studied painting at Concordia University and completed a BFA at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2002. She has held more than 20 solo exhibitions internationally. Fiona’s studio practice extends beyond painting to include several large-scale murals, videos, and other public art projects. In her free time, she writes and records music and videos, often working with other musicians. She currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC.

Fiona Ackerman
Originally from Montreal, Fiona Ackerman studied paintings at Concordia University and completing a BFA at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2002. She currently lives and works in Vancouver BC and exhibits her work internationally (Canada, Europe, USA, UK and Asia). Fiona’s studio practice extends beyond painting to include several large-scale murals, video projections and other public art projects. In her free time, she writes and records music and videos, often working collaboratively with other musicians. Rooted in abstraction, I want to push my work in divergent directions, to surprise myself, and keep the possibilities for my painting wide open. Working in series, I develop a stylistic language specific to the mood or conceptual objectives I'm working on. Over the years, my work has seen many different stylistic evolutions. I see my arc of work much like that of an author. Each series is like a new book, different in tone, style, and story. But they are all part of a larger archive, and each a meaningful piece of the whole. - Ackerman

By Adam Cohen
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Rendered in pink, lemon, green, and blue this abstract painting with a floral motif is by Adam Cohen.
Thickly applied expressive brushstrokes in a bright palette bring a palpable energy to this lively, joyful painting that resembles a floral tapestry.
Cohen likes to cut into wet paint with a palette knife to create visible texture.
Pink, lemon, green, and blue flower petals overlap one another in a luscious visual display.
“… I like abstract painting. I can create accidents. And then I can edit in or out what I like. Use them as a springboard. A place to build the rest of the painting around. I create paintings that feel deeply personal to me. Somehow I always know when they are done.” Adam Cohen
“A painting by Adam Cohen is like a sudden burst of light. Vision is dazzled by a surface alive with color, swarming with incident. As you approach the canvas, it feels as if it were coming forward to meet you, to immerse you in a field of visual energy.” Carter Ratcliff, Art Critic
Adam Cohen studied at Philadelphia’s Tyler School of Art and lived and painted in Rome for a year. After many successful years as an illustrator in NYC, he returned to his first love...
