The still life that we describe here should be attributed to the pictorial production of the Neapolitan school, which between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries stood out for the production of paintings related to this pictorial genre. There were many painters who tried their hand at this genre, inspired also by visits and the presence of French or Flemish colleagues in the city, even going so far as to pass on their art to close family members and thus forming real workshops: this is the case of Giuseppe Recco, with his children Elena and Nicola Maria, Lorenzo and Giuseppe de Caro, sons of Baldassarre or Francesco and Giuseppe Lavagna, whose works come very close to ours. Although there are many tangencies with Francesco Lavagna's setting, subject matter, and luminous tone, the work appears closer to the production of another Neapolitan painter, namely Gaspare Lopes. The extreme harmony between the two is also seen in their probable discipleship path within Andrea Belvedere's workshop, although Lavagna's name does not appear in the records while Lopes' does. The latter was influenced by the ornamental style of Monnoyer, a French painter and etcher of Baroque taste, imported to the Neapolitan city by Jean Baptiste Doubisson, from whom he learned the frivolous taste for decorativism and the strong chromaticism of the hues. In addition to his apprenticeship in his hometown, he was able to travel extensively throughout his life, touching on Venice, Florence, Rome but also In Poland, as reported by biographer Bernardo De Dominici. The open-air setting, in an Arcadian-style garden with an airy backdrop marked by the vivid hues of vegetation and sky, are typical of his style, as are the haphazard arrangement of wicker baskets and bronze or terracotta vases containing flowers of various species or fruits, among which the broken watermelon, depicted many times in his works, should be mentioned. Although Lavagna also paints still lifes within open spaces, the lateral perspective fugue, the overlapping arrangement of objects in the foreground, the brighter hues and the greater care in rendering details with a leaner, less mellow drafting allow them to find more affinity with the way Lopes paints, in whose still lifes, moreover, he often uses to depict a tree or plant elements that close off the view of the landscape laterally, almost framing it in the distance; one of the most famous examples is found in Young Woman with Flowers in a Garden, at the Museo di San Martino in Naples.
