A highly impressive display of painterly skills are apparent in this stunning still life of flowers by Gerald Cooper. The detail that he captures is breathtaking, from the delicate petals all the way down to the stems viewed through the bottom of the glass vase. An extremely attractive piece, presented in a handsome frame, ready to hang in a dining room or sitting room. Gerald Cooper (1898-1975) A still life of summer flowers including pinks, roses and irises Signed and further inscribed and dated 1967 on a label to the reverse Oil on panel 21 x 17 inches without the frame 26½x 22½ inches with the frame Exhibited Stacy Marks, Eastbourne Gerald Cooper was a painter, sculptor and teacher whose works included children’s portraits, landscapes and horses, but who was noted for his meticulous flowers in the manner of the Dutch Old Masters. He was married to Muriel Minter, their daughter being Jenifer Cooper; John Denham Gallery held a family show in 1984. Cooper was born in West Bromwich, Staffordshire. During World War I he served in the Observer Corps and Royal Flying Corps, afterwards attending West Bromwich Art School. From 1921 Cooper studied at Royal College of Art, where in 1925 he shared the Drawing Prize of the school of painting with Phyllis Dodd. Cooper became principal of Wimbledon School of Art, 1929 until retirement, and was keenly interested in art education. He was a member of the Bray and National Committees on Art Education and was an examiner for the Ministry of Education. He was also a member of National Society of Painters and Sculptors, and showed at the New English Art Club, Stacy-Marks in Eastbourne, the Royal Academy extensively until the year of his death and elsewhere in Britain.
