John Mann
Still Life with Daffodils

In “Still Life with Daffodils,” bright yellow blossoms stand in a white jug against a subdued background. The light and impressionistic detailing, particularly on the jug and in the folds of the tablecloth, indicate the influence of European modernism on the artist’s mature style. This is the first work by John Mann to come to market since 1999... The painting is hand-signed "John Mann" in pencil verso (see detail photo). John Mann (1903-1970) was an American painter best known for his figurative works, portraiture and still lifes. Born in Cape Cod, MA, Mann studied at the Boston Museum School of Fine Art before embarking on a career as an artist. During his lifetime, he had the distinction of being one of the only American painters whose work was acquired by prominent New Yorker Frederic Clay Bartlett (1873-1953), an early board member of the Museum of Modern Art and one of the most significant collectors of French Post-Impressionist and modernist art.
