About the Item

French Post impressionist still life oil painting by Louis Pastour (1876-1948). Anemones in a vase, signed and dated 1932 in hand carved wood frame. He was born and worked in Cannes, Cote d'Azur, South of France. He belongs to the Post impressionist movement, painting with a palette knife, his use of colour, his love of light, his favourite subjects: flowers, landscapes and marine scenes. Hard economic times forced him to work at the age of 13 years as a journeyman painter. He obtained a silver medal at drawing lessons from the "Association Polytechnique de Cannes". At 18 he moved to Paris. Labourer by day he attended evening classes at the "Ecole des Arts Decoratifs". It is here that he learned his mastery of the palette knife. This technique suits him perfectly, because no theoretical method exist. The flexible blade allowing him to release all his artistic temperament. Back in Cannes, Louis Pastour married the love of his life, Magdalene. Born of this union a son, Auguste, musician. At 24, he was delegated to work at the "Exposition Universelle" in Paris in 1900. The following year, he presided over the inauguration of the Union of Unions. Very socially involved, he founded the institution of the Industrial Court of Cannes and the workers school. In 1902, Louis Pastour founded the Association des Beaux Arts de Cannes (ABAC), a worker group with a passion for art, and creates an annual exhibition of local painters. March 10, 1903, was the opening of the first Cannes Salon. With his continuing success, he opened a shop of paint and art supplies "The Palette of Rubens," in Cannes. This location became a centre of cultural exchange of a regional art movement. It was frequented by 'tout le beau monde' Dukes and princesses and other illustrious artists. At the initiative of Denys Puech, sculptor, he received the Academic Palms in 1911. In 1912, he traveled and painted in Egypt, fascinated by this environment that enriched his painting. In 1913, he stayed in Bruges with his friend Georges-Emile Lebacq. Rain and fog inspires his palette. He exhibited for the first time in Paris in 1920 at age 44, in the sumptuous rooms of the Devambez Galleries. He enjoys a great success there and is called "The Painter of the Sun" (''Lou Pintre dou Souleu'') It is from this golden period that our painting dates. Showing internationally and in Paris became an annual event for the painter from Cannes. Eager to travel, new landscapes, he painted in Morocco in 1923 and in Italy in 1928. But it was always to Cannes, infinite source of inspiration, that he inevitably returns. In 1928 he paints the murals of the funicular station of Super Cannes, in the California hills. The exhibitions in galleries in Cannes continued. In the 1940s, at the Municipal Casino and in the Malmaison, they were organised by the Galerie Maeght, belonging to his friends Marguerite and Aimé Maeght, showing alongside Jean-Gabriel Domergue and Henri Lebasque. His paintings were acquired by various museums, the Louvre, the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris, the Jules Cheret museum in Nice, the Simu Museum in Bucharest ... Much sought after by advertisers, his paintings illustrate the posters of Railways, including the PLM (Paris-Lyon-Mediterranean) and various magazines.
