Lynette Cook
Mark of Zorro / acrylic painting

2017

About the Item

Photorealistic still life street scene that features an American flag and resist sticker in the window of a home. Brown with red, white and blue. The street numbers are 8102 (2018 in reverse). A sign of the times. 'Mark of Zorro' features a "Z" in shadow, and the title conjures images of contemporary heroes and heroines that are every-day common citizens, as in the legend of Zorro, where a commoner stood for justice in a fight against immorality. 24 x 24 inch painting is impeccably painted by Lynette Cook, whose contemporary acrylic paintings glimpse places near her San Francisco home. The series captures buildings and places around San Francisco and other Northern California towns which convey the stories of their inhabitants. Exterior facades of urban dwellings that are both architecturally complex — and mundane — are the focus of Cook’s Shadows and Silhouettes series. The paintings feature the rhythmic dark-light dance of light traveling through wrought-iron balconies and inner-city fire escapes, as well as shadows cast from clean laundry hanging out to dry. The work captures that which is universal and connects all people in their elemental desire to create a sense of home. This important series that was exhibited at California’s Morris Graves Museum in 2016. In the same year, the artist was awarded a prestigious Jackson Pollock-Krasner Foundation honorary grant. Photorealism is a genre of art that encompasses painting, drawing and other graphic media. An American art movement that began in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Photorealism evolved from Pop Art as a counter to Abstract Expressionism as well as Minimalist art movements. Though Photorealists share some aspects of American realists, such as Edward Hopper, they tried to set themselves as much apart from traditional realists as they did Abstract Expressionists. Photorealists were much more influenced by the work of Pop artists and were reacting against Abstract Expressionism. The word Photorealism was coined by Louis K. Meisel in 1969 and appeared in print for the first time in 1970 in a Whitney Museum catalogue for the show "Twenty-two Realists." It is also sometimes labeled as Super-Realism, New Realism, Sharp Focus Realism, or Hyper-Realism. The first generation of American Photorealists includes the painters Richard Estes, Ralph Goings, Chuck Close, Charles Bell, Audrey Flack, Don Eddy, Robert Bechtle, Ron Kleemann, Richard McLean, John Salt, John Kacere, and Robert Cottingham. Photorealism's influence and popularity continues to grow, with new books such as Juxtapoz's 2014 book entitled Hyperreal detailing current trends within the artistic genre. • 8 Track I - Graffiti and rust covered bridge contemporary photorealist painting
    By Roland Kulla
    Located in Chicago, IL
This painting captures a graffiti and rust covered steel bridge with bright blue skies and a sliver of green trees in and urban architectural setting. Rolland has always been fascinated by the built environment. Reflecting on what the structures tell about their builders as well as their interaction with nature and the results of time. He focuses on the engineering ingenuity that created Chicago’s many bridges. Structural elements are abstracted from their context and painted with a hard-edged realism on a scale that highlights the monumentality of the forms and the creativity necessary for their existence. Shown here is “Eight Track” Roland Kulla 8 Track...
