Martin Koole's paintings are distinguished from the work of other painters by his very headstrong way of applying the paint.
His brushstroke makes his work immediately recognizable. This is particularly striking in his portraits. With an apparently nonchalant but accurate hand gesture, Koole brings the sitter to life, not only through the resemblance but also through the use of light. The result is agile and surprising and of great vitality.
Making portraits is just one aspect of Koole's skills. He also paints series of dreamy scenes with figures in a sometimes indefinable space and atmosphere, in which their sometimes enigmatic presence poses questions to the viewer. Here too Koole plays with the light. The effect is a balance between reflection and reality.
Martin Koole's still lifes show a similar balance in a controlled use of colour.
More exuberant are the bird paintings that Koole manages to portray with a somewhat richer palette.
