Still life with a Chinese bowl by Jean Grimal
Located in Gent, VOV
Jean Grimal is a true 20th century discovery. This breathtaking piece is a gorgeous example of his mastery as an artist. He beautifully creates chiaroscuro in this painting. The way the light touches the edges of the Chinese bowl and the grapes is an example of his skill in representing light. Jean Grimal (1942-1998) was born in the town of Tulle, France in 1942. Jean’s family moved to Paris when he was 8 years of age. After receiving a classical French education with studies in Latin and Greek, Jean Grimal entered the University to receive his Baccalaureate. He then attended Claude Barnard School for three years, when he received his Art Degree.  Upon completion Grimal taught art for seven years.  As Grimal’s own interest in formal painting and art began to possess him, the artist’s destiny changed.  In 1967 Jean Grimal stepped aside from teaching and pursued a career in professional painting and working as an illustrator in advertising.  As an advertising illustrator, Grimal worked with Lise Goldfard for more than 25 years at Studio 44 where they collaborated with major and important accounts, such as: Air France, Christofle, Peugeot, Lacoste, to name a few. At the same time he began presenting his formal paintings to galleries in Paris and Cannes, France and in London and Windsor, England.  Much to his surprise, Grimal found that his paintings were sought after by major art galleries and collectors throughout Europe.  After a number of years of being an important and successful art illustrator for these major accounts, he found himself having to choose between the two.  Fortunately for collectors, he chose to dedicate his life to the classical style of painting.  Jean looked at the simplest things in life through a microscope, where he could take the simplest object and depict the age of the fruit or the leaf. Jean Grimal received great pleasure from his work and painted for over thirty years.  As his style matured and became ever more perfect Jean Grimal truly reached the pinnacle of his career.  The artist’s methods were particularly distinguished when measured against his peers.  Grimal’s painting skill was distinctive and exceptional. Jean Grimal was known for his realistic trompe l’oeil and still life paintings.  The artist would carefully arrange the objects to form a satisfying composition.  By painting every shadow, highlight, and reflection within each composition Grimal brought mundane subjects to life.  His tight rendering combined with his attention to light and detail allowed him to blur the lines between illusion and reality, truly making his works one of a kind.  Grimal’s trompe l’oeil paintings consist of intricate compositions of cards, envelopes, photographs, paper of different materials and weights, backs of canvases, images of other artists’ works, kitchen utensils, pistols, and more.  Grimal had a talent for mastering these illusions that deceive the eye in his trompe l’oeil paintings.    No matter what genre Grimal was painting, tight, unperceivable brushwork characterizes his work.  The artist painted every crease and crinkle, every shadow and highlight, every detail.  By doing so, he was able to capture each individual surface texture of the objects in his paintings.  Grimal was also fabulous at depicting light in his paintings- often contrasting strong lights with strong darks, creating chiaroscuro modeling.  His still life paintings are reminiscent of Dutch seventeenth century...

'Omega I' - Contemporary Geometric Abstraction Pixelation - Skull - Bosch
Located in Atlanta, GA
'Omega I' is an abstract pointillist painting featuring hues of tan, ocher, green, brown, pink and black. Robert Hightower is inspired by the work of Giotto, Hieronymus Bosch, Jean-François Millet, Roger Brown, Howard Arkley and Julian Opie. This piece is a part of a special immersive gallery installation, “The Apocalypse Simulacra,” which is a narrative presentation of the twilight of humanity, at the fulcrum of extinction by Atlanta-based artist Robert Hightower. Through stage-set constructions, readymade plastic models and paintings, Hightower investigates the duality of right/wrong, good/bad, eternal/ephemeral in light of the imminent end of the Human Epoch. It depicts the ideological origins of corporate greed and power, the reality of wealth distribution in the “American Dream,” and the socio-economic and environmental impacts of that collective greed. After receiving a BFA in sculpture from the University of Georgia, Hightower moved to New York City and participated in The Bronx Museum of the Art’s AIM Fellowship (Artist In the Marketplace). While in New York, his interests expanded to include art installation and the creation of spaces, and has since designed and built many unique homes, penthouses and restaurants throughout the United States. Hightower has returned home to Atlanta and will be presenting his most comprehensive body of work to date, “The Apocalypse Simulacra,” a unique universe of beauty, dichotomy and uncertainty. ARTIST STATEMENT The 'Apocalypse Simulacra' is a presentation of the twilight of humanity, at the fulcrum of extinction. The climate is the subject. The Simulacra is the Theme. First discussed by Plato, the Simulacra is the search for Truth in Duality. Developing into Post-Modernism with Nietzsche’s: truth=Truth. Now with Bauvillard, the Simulacra has evolved beyond Post-Modernism, into the wholesale confusion of the real/fake, the true/false… between reality and hyper-reality. This crumbling, confusing of the truth (not necessarily the Truth) is our Reality. For over two decades, I have created large format paintings of strip malls, suburban houses and toys. These paintings present singular images flattened-out (almost floating) on color-fields. They create a certain duality - a loving portrait of an inanimate object that would not normally be singled-out for affection. With my latest work, I have added a variety of iconic images: an airplane, a whisky bottle, a woman floating in a pool. The icons are presented in a pixelated or degenerated state. In addition to paintings, I have used adult-size building blocks to create sculptures or three-dimensional paintings. Using a child's toy at an adult-scale gives the building blocks an austere and powerful presence. The building blocks echo the blocks of the pixelated paintings...

Mod Italian Surrealist Oil Painting Jean Calogero Big Eyed Girl, Victorian Party
Located in Surfside, FL
Jean Calogero (Italian, 1922-2001) 23 x 30. framed. 21.5 x 15 canvas. Hand signed Little girl at a party with flowers Calogero was born August 20, 1922 in Catania, Sicily. Self-taught Surreal Artist First exhibitions in 1945 in Sicily and Rome were very successful. He arrived in Paris in 1947 and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He is best known for his Surrealism and genre works. His paintings are dreamlike and visionary. They travel to an infinite space created by the artist through his memories, the sky and the sea so dear to him. In his paintings there are a few common themes: the masks with their dual dimensions that hide or shows only what you want, the profiles of the women, and the horsemen, drawn as the Sicilian tradition requires. He exhibited at the Gallery Hervé in 1951 and the following year he went to New York to present his show, then in 1953 he was invited to Los Angeles, where he returned two years later, and from where he regularly exhibited his works, and San Francisco. In 1954, Maximilien Gauthier devoted a book to him published by "The Gemini." The first exhibition in Japan was in 1965. He was awarded the Grand Silver Medal by the City of Paris in 1957. Calogero had countless exhibitions in Paris, in the fifties, plus the American exhibitions in New York (Associated American Artists, 1952), Los Angeles (James Vigevano Galleries, 1953) and then later in Japan and in major galleries in Italy. He lived and worked for many years in Paris and Italy. He died in 2001. Galerie Hervè, Parigi 1950. Associated American Artists - New York 1952. James Vigevano Galleries, Los Angeles 1953. Large French Modernist Nabi Oil Painting Jean Souverbie Still Life Tulipes Jaune
Located in Surfside, FL
Jean Souverbie (French, 1891 - 1981) "Tulipes Jaunes" 1970 Oil on Canvas. Hand signed and dated ('70) lower right. Inscribed verso on canvas. Provenance Paisnel Gallery label verso, Anaf-Martinon (S.V.V.) Tableaux modernes & contemporains, 01 oct 2006 Lyon, France Dimensions: Sight Size: 36.5 x 23.5 in. Overall Framed Size: 43.75 x 31 in. Jean Souverbie was a figurative painter of the French school, known for known for his cubist and modern interpretations of classical nudes, in addition to seascapes and still lifes. Born in Boulogne-Billancourt in 1891, It was a meeting with Nabis group artists Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier in 1908 that influenced Souverbie to become an artist. An interest in the work of the classical painter Nicolas Poussin at the start of his artistic career would turn out to be an enduring one, the influence of which can be seen throughout Souverbie’s oeuvre. Souverbie enrolled at the Académie Ranson in 1916, where he befriended Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, and Félix Edouard Vallotton. Souverbie's art style is best described as a distinctive blend of Synthetic Cubism and Classicism (also referred to as Neo-Greek or a return to order). Initially influenced by the Post Impressionist, Symbolists and Fauvist Nabi artists like Maurice Denis In the 1920’s, Souverbie turned toward cubism after the discovery of Georges Braque’s work, but the decisive turning point was reached in 1925, when he exhibited along the Section d’or at the Vavin Raspail gallery and met Charles Gleizes, André Lhote, Louis Marcoussis, and many other members of the Parisian avant-garde including Pablo Picasso who he deeply admired. This master, who had become a friend, deeply influenced Souverbie’s artistic conceptions. His nudes became more and more geometrical, their sculptural bodies echoed cubists icons of the Spanish painter. Souverbie went on to have a show of 54 Cubist paintings at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery in 1929, which solidified his reputation as an important figure in the Parisian art scene of the 1920s and 1930s. By the 1930’s Souverbie had become renowned. He turned to the realisation of monumental works (commissions) which made him famous around the world. In 1937, he was amongst artists chosen to decorate the new Palais de Chaillot, built for the Universal Exhibition to replace the Palais du Trocadéro. Jean Souverbie taught at the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris during the 1940s. Among his best-known students are Philippe de La Hogue-Rey, Philippe Lejeune, Jean Le Merdy, Yves de Saint-Front, Georges Visconti and Pierrette Bloch. He was an important mentor figure for Francoise Gilot during her early career as she developed her own artistic style. During the second half of the 1940’s, he contributed to the decoration of 8 Art Deco ocean liners...

Lilac flowers at the door, 1901 uplifting floral still life large oil on canvas
Located in Norwich, GB
Here is a painting that will lift you - one feels happy every time one looks at it. It is such a lovely, unusual twist to the theme of the floral still life: here we have flowers, not in a vase, but attached to a wooden front door. I wonder if the artist did this with actual flowers, perhaps for a sweetheart, and then decided to paint the scene? At any rate: who wouldn't want to come home to find a large bunch of glorious lilac as they come home? The artist is Emile Baudoux (1850 -1929), who studied with Humbert and Cabanel. Paris-born, he liked to work in Normandy, where he had his studio. He exhibited his work at the "Salon des Artistes Français" until 1927, where he obtained a gold medal in 1910. The important oil on canvas presented here, dating from 1901, may have been shown at the Salon, as it bears an exhibition number "30" at the upper right of the canvas. It is signed and dated at the lower left as seen in the photos. Measuring 81 x 60 cm, the overall size including its original large oak frame...

Fruit by Maria Tort Xirau (Catalan, 1924-2018) signed lower corner dated 1993 oil painting on canvas, framed framed: 24 x 33 inches canvas: 20 x 29 inches Very good condition. Provenance: private collection Maria Tort Xirau ( Figueres , 26 May 1924 – 6 June 2018) was a painter and photographic and cinematographic editor from Emporda. She developed a long professional career in leading photographic studios, in films for The Walt Disney Company and also in advertising claims for companies such as Educa Borràs . The second half of her life was dedicated to painting, exercising a luminous, varied and nostalgic chromatic style in the techniques of oil and watercolor and with exhibitions of her work in Barcelona and Figueres. The Biographical Dictionary of Art Empordà defined Tort Xirau's work as "a painting that is characterized by the strength of the strokes, the vividness and brightness of the chromatic range and exudes mastery of the photographic technique. A mixture of nostalgia and tenderness is evident.". Tort Xirau's paintings were exhibited in the two towns where she spent her life: in 1992 she exhibited his work at the Caixa de Figueres Exhibition Hall. Two years later, she did it at Sala Conex in Barcelona and in 2007 and 2013 the Consortium of Sant Ferran Castle and the Figueres Town Council organized tribute exhibitions. In 2013, she ceded to the council of the city of Figueres her work Mercat de la plaça de l'Ajuntament , watercolored on paper around 1991, which is exhibited in the rest room of the building. On June 6, 2018, she died in Figueres at the age of 94, receiving the apostolic blessing . Two years after her death, part of her paintings were included in the exhibition Paint, create, live.
