MIR TRINXET, Joaquin (Barcelona, 1873-1940).
Joaquín Mir studied at the School of Fine Arts of San Jordi of Barcelona and the workshop of the painter Luis Graner. His style was also influenced by the School of Olot, hometown of his father. In 1893 forms the "Colla del Safra" along with artists like Isidro Nonell, Ricard Canals Ramón Pichot or, in the last years of the century is related to the artistic atmosphere of "Els Quatre Gats". He completed his training in 1895, the year he spent one season in Madrid copying works of Velázquez. In these years he attended the Exhibition of Fine Arts in Barcelona, in its editions of 1894, 1896 and 1898. Winning a second medal in the Exhibition of Madrid in 1899, the same year he moved to the capital with the aim of opositar a scholarship in Rome. By not get it, go with Santiago Rusiñol in Mallorca, on a journey that will mean a definitive turning point in his career. Mir is dazzled by the Majorcan countryside, in particular by Sa Calobra, which earned him an inexhaustible source of inspiration. In 1901 solo exhibition at the Sala Parés of Barcelona the Majorcan fruit of this first stage, and gets back second medal in the National Exhibition. After a period of illness that forced him to move to Reus, in 1907 he obtained the first medal at the International Exhibition of Fine Arts in Barcelona. Already established as a leading figure in the Catalan scene, acquires definitive national recognition in 1917 when he was awarded the National Prize of Fine Arts. Four years later he married and settled permanently in Vilanova i la Geltru. His successes happen, and in 1929 obtained first medal at the International Exhibition in Barcelona. The next year he won the medal of honor of the National Exhibition of Madrid, award pursuing since 1922. While it was a mainly indigenous painter, made personal and group exhibitions in Washington, Paris, Pittsburgh, New York, Philadelphia, Amsterdam, Buenos Aires and Venice. Biography:
Born on a farm in Polk County, Nebraska, during the famous blizzard of 1888, Augustus Dunbier became Nebraska's most prominent and widely traveled artist in the early to mid 20th century. Working until the year before his death at age 89, he painted landscapes, still life, and portraits in a style that others, but not he, labelled Impressionist. At age 10, he saw his first professional art work at the Trans-Mississippi Exposition in Omaha, and this exposure set the direction of his life. Artist Biography:
Rebecca is a still life artist based in Tunbridge Wells, whose practice approaches subject matter with a classical technical style. Having attended Maidstone school of art Rebecca went on to enjoy a successful career in Television Set design. Rebecca began making a body of work as a full time artist in 2015 and is currently based in Langton Green where she produces artwork from her own studio. Rebecca also enjoys painting portraits and won the 2018 ‘The Artist’s People’s Choice Award’ with the Artist and Leisure painter magazines for her Portrait ‘Colin’. The artist has featured in Galleries and Exhibitions all over the UK including with the Society of Women Artists in London. Inspired by the Dutch masters, in both technique and lighting, she uses many glazed layers and favours ‘Chiaroscuro’ lighting with bold contrasts between dark and light. Working exclusively in oils, her props cupboard is brimming with hoarded silverware, glass, and china teacups which she uses to great effect in her work, capturing reflections and tranquility in the rendering of light as it passes through the translucent skin of fruit or glass, and porcelain.
“My compositions are constructed in my mind’s eye before I begin hunting for my props and I am very much drawn to a combination of items that create an appealing scene or give a sense of nostalgia. I spend as long as I can on the composition and use a digital camera to help work out the best composition. I spend hours rooting around on ebay, antique shops – and sometimes even friends’ houses for things that I’m specifically looking for. Nina Karasek (Joële)
born 1883 Kuttenberg, Czech Lands, Austro-Hungarian Empire, died in 1952 (I have also seen the date recorded as 1933) Vienna, Austria. Nina Karasek was an Austrian Impressionist & Modern artist who was born in 1883. Her work was featured in exhibitions at the Es Baluard, Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art and the Bildraum Bodensee.
Little is known of Nina Karasek's life. She was born in 1883 in Kuttenberg (Kutná Hora) in Bohemia, studied art at the Kunstschule für Frauen und Mädchen (Art School for Women and Girls) in Vienna, Austria, under Adalbert Seligmann and Tina Blau. She studied at the Frauenakademie in Vienna and Munich. In the 1920's she worked first as a landscape painter and an illustrator, later turning toward symbolism, painting mystical subjects after her interest in spiritualism. Her conventional works were shown at various exhibitions. At the age of 44, while she was copying a work by Rembrandt in an Italian museum, she fell into an altered state of consciousness. Rembrandt appeared to her, took possession of her arm, and immediately her hand started to draw something quite different from what she had intended. From then on, for the rest of her life Nina Karasek was in “supernatural” contact with a series of great masters like Rembrandt, Albrecht Dürer, Goya, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Gustav Klimt and others. Under their guidance and inspiration, she drew and painted works "in the style" of the masters. But very soon her works became stylistically more and more unrestricted and Symbolist, showing an enormous range of creative expression, ranging from symbolic and allegorical motifs to bewildering images with a fantastic arsenal of figures and private characters, signs, and symbols, and to frantic, gestural sketches and abstract compositions. From then on, she often signed her works with her esoteric “primordial name” Joële. (Nina Karasik-Joel)
Almost everything we know about her life was from what she noted on the reverse of her drawings: sometimes diary-like notes of her horrible living conditions during World War II, but often strangely impenetrable explanations of the depicted motifs – often as fascinating and mysterious as the drawings themselves. In her works and notes, an exciting private cosmology and mythology unfolds, a drama of hidden powers and principles that flow through macrocosm as well as microcosm. Shortly after their discovery, Nina Karasek's Spiritualist, mediumistic works have found their way into galleries and major international collections.

Born in Detroit, Alexander Minewski left home at the age of 14 to work in the circus. He subsequently worked as a sign painter and a logger. Minewski first studied at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Detroit (1936-1939) and received scholarships that allowed him to attend the Art Students League in New York City (1939-1942). There, he studied under artists including Jean Charlot, Ernest Fiene, George Grosz and Vaclav Vytlacil.
During World War II, Minewski joined the army and fought as a combat engineer. Wounded in Burma while fighting with Merrill's Marauders, he spent two years there recovering from his wounds. Following his time in Burma, Minewski studied for two years on the G.I. Bill in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumiere (1950-1952) and, independently, with Hans Hofmann in New York City (1952-1953). Hofmann was influential on his style and his work shifted away from a moody realism towards a fuller expressionism.
