About the Item

Late mid-century acrylic on canvas, still life of a bottle by Japanese artist Mayumi Ozawa. Signed bottom centre with dedication and date to the bottom right. This vibrant artwork presents a fascinating interplay of geometric patterns and optical illusions. Dominating the scene is a transparent bottle, ingeniously filled with a checkerboard design of white and burnt orange squares. These squares twist and turn, creating a mesmerizing sense of movement. The bottle appears as if it’s caught within a whimsical dance of light and shadow. The background continues this theme, featuring a checkerboard of purples and pinks that provides depth and contrast. This dynamic backdrop enhances the central bottle's ethereal quality, drawing the viewer's gaze into the core of the artwork. The artist skillfully manipulates color and form to challenge perceptions, crafting an engaging visual narrative that captivates the imagination and invites endless contemplation. OZAWA MAYOUMI OZAWA Mayumi (1941-) Western-style painter. Born in Tokyo. Currently resides in Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture. Left L'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs de Paris before graduating. In her 20s she married and divorced a surgeon. After working in the editing department for Shinchosha Publishing’s “Geijutsu Shincho,” she went to France in 1975 to study on an invitation by the French government. Transferred to L'Ecole Nationale Superieure des Arts Decoratifs de Paris as a third-year student. While studying in France, she became engaged to Comte Turpin de Crisse (1931–1990), who was director of the cultural information department of France’s foreign ministry and a professor of protocol and decorum, moved her base of operations to Crissay-sur-Manse in the Loire river area where they had a vacation house, and built an atelier (1976–1981). She fell under the spell of climate, buildings, and religiousness like those of nursery tales and made her debut as a professional landscape painter from that area. She was told by Yves Brayer that her paintings are characterized by a touch of warmth, and that determined her style. She was supported by and popular in the local area, but her works were handled by and permanently installed mainly by several famous galleries in Paris. Since returning to Japan in 1983, she has been exhibiting works mainly in personal exhibitions (Tokyo and Osaka). Her works are included in collections at art museums and libraries in Japan and other countries. Eight drawings of the old house where she lived in Crissay-sur-Manse have been used in a panel on tourist sites for the village, which is considered the most beautiful village in France, and they are posted on the walls of famous places. She became an honorary villager of Crissay-sur-Manse in 2013.

'Style Moderne', Mid-Century Abstract Geometric, Oil on Canvas.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 20th century modern abstract oil on canvas attributed to French artist Norbert Palmade. The painting is not signed but was bought from his atelier and with a collection of his paintings and is therefore attributed to him. A highly colourful, energetic and impactful painting. The paint is very thickly applied in parts and is therefore also somewhat sculptural as a piece of art. Sand has been added to the paint to give the image great texture. A joyful painting to brighten any room. Norbert Palmade spent much of his early years living in Morocco. He arrived there in 1930 at the age of two and stayed until 1947 when he returned home to France. He finished his schooling in Hyères in the south of France, then travelled up to Paris to study architecture. There aged 25 he set up a public works business and worked as an architect right up until his retirement in 1991. Throughout this journey Palmade never stopped painting, at first in watercolours. He had always drawn, then moved on to gouache, oil and finally in the last twenty years, acrylic. The latter suited his rapid handling of paint well. He says of himself that he had no particular speciality. He would paint whatever gave him pleasure, although a large part of his heart belonged to those early years in Morocco and he painted many a canvas with subjects from this country. He took part in exhibitions in a number of towns near the south coast of France including, Sanary, Le Pradet and Ollioules. He was also the guest of honour at the Academy of the Var. Geometric abstraction is a form of abstract art based on the use of geometric forms sometimes, though not always, placed in non-illusionistic space and combined into non-objective (non-representational) compositions. Although the genre was popularized by avant-garde artists in the early twentieth century, similar motifs have been used in art since ancient times. Sonia and Robert Delauney...

'Kitchen Shelves'. Contemporary Scottish Surrealist Acrylic on Canvas.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Surrealist contemporary acrylic on canvas by Scottish artist Frank McLean Docherty R.S.W. This piece is wonderfully colourful, playful and is typical of his witty sense of humour. Docherty likes to tease us visually and asks questions and presents conundrums to the viewer. Frank McLean Docherty was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1942. He became a student at Glasgow School of Art in 1960 and graduated from the Department of Printed Textiles in 1964. He taught in a secondary school in the East End of Glasgow for two years, thereafter departing to work in Dublin in the Republic of Ireland as a textile designer (Marks & Spencer, Heals and Liberty of London). He was also an illustrator for a range of newspapers and an Art Director of magazines. In 1973, he was appointed Principal Teacher of Art in a Scottish High School and in 1978 was honoured by the Queen when he was appointed Member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (R.S.W.) He left education in 1994. Since that time he has developed a vision which is quite unique in Scottish Art. Bank Managers, toucans, lighthouses, penguins, bowler hats, Frank Docherty...
