About the Item

MOÏSE KISLING French-Polish, 1891 - 1953 BOUQUET OF FLOWERS WITH MIMOSA signed & dedicated "à Edith Mara", Kisling (lower left) oil on canvas 13 X 88-1/2 inches (33 X 22.5 cm.) framed: 21-1/4 X 17-1/8 inches (54 X 43.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Spanish Collector "Painting mimosas was always the most work for my father. He would paint each flower one by one, swiftly swirling his paintbrush that was saturated with colour. At the end of the movement, he would promptly lift his brush from the canvas, leaving a small dot, a little bas relief" JEAN KISLING QUOTED IN THE CENTENAIRE (EXHIBITION CATALOGUE), PARIS, GALERIE DANIEL MALINGUE, 1991, N.P. Moïse Kisling, in Polish Mojżesz Kisling (Krakow, January 22, 1891 - Sanary-sur-Mer, April 29, 1953) was a French painter of Polish origin and Jewish descent. Expressionist style, belonged to the so-called School of Paris. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Krakow. In 1910 he moved to Paris at the age of 19 and was contemporary with artistis such as Picasso, Georges Braque, Modigliani, Jules Pascin, and others, residing first in Montmartre and then in Montparnasse. When the First World War broke out, he volunteered to serve in the French Foreign Legion, and in 1915 he was seriously injured in the Battle of the Somme, for which he was granted French citizenship. Kisling lived and worked in Montparnasse, where he was part of the community of renowned artists who gathered there at that time. Between 1911 and 1912 he lived in Céret, a village in the Pyrenees where there was a flourishing community of artists led by Pinchus Krémègne. In 1913 he took a studio in Montparnasse, where he lived for the next 27 years, coinciding in the same building with Jules Pascin and Amedeo Modigliani. His style used in landscape painting was similar to that of Marc Chagall, but, being a master in representing the female body, his nude and surrealist portraits as well as bouquet of flowers earned him the widest acclaim. In 1940 he volunteered again for military service. When the French army was discharged at the time of delivery to the Germans, Kisling, who was of Jewish origin, went to the United States and, after exhibiting in New York and Washington, lived in California until 1946. The largest collection of his works can be seen at the Musée du Petit Palais, in Geneva, Switzerland.
