Cello- 21st Century Contemporary Dutch Stille Painting of a Music Instrument
By Rein Pol
Located in Nuenen, Noord Brabant
Rein Pol Cello 93 x 120 cm ( Frame is included 107 x 134 cm) Oil on wood panel, 1987 Looking at Rein Pol's work, it is first and foremost striking that the artist's subjects are very diverse. However, he was mainly known for his paintings 'with trains'. If you look further, you will see that Rein Pol has many sources of inspiration about which he can tell 'stories in paint'. On the website of the Classical Academy in Groningen there is a beautiful teacher portrait of Rein Pol, the first part of this text comes from that site: The fact that Rein Pol made paintings with trains in them gave him the stigma of being a train painter. The 'Blue Angel' is just one of many, often autobiographical, subjects in his paintings. This also applies to nature, landscape, persons and objects from his immediate environment, in which transience is an underlying theme. “As a child I was always drawing. The profession of art teacher appealed to me. It never occurred to me that I could become a painter.' At the Minerva Academy, teachers such as Ger Siks and Matthijs Röling impressed him. Their influence is still noticeable in his paintings: the atmospheric of Röling and the alienating of Siks. After the academy Rein briefly taught at a secondary school. "Not an unqualified success! So when I was asked to come and teach at Minerva, I seized the opportunity with both hands. I have learned a lot myself from teaching academy students.' A violin on fire, a train soaring to heaven, Romance at its best! The passion is in the details, the feathers of a dead bird, the drops on a misty mirror. And that passion is what Romanticism is all about. Rein Pol has been working professionally as a painter since 1976. He always has a keen eye for the expressiveness of the apparently insignificant detail. Every theme that Pol paints is depicted in a clear, harmonious composition with great attention to light, texture, spatial and color effects. The paintings are not intended as an exact copy of the reality around us, but as a representation of our own reality! Hans van Seventer previously wrote: “The subjects of Rein Pol's paintings move between the ordinary and the absurd. He paints musical instruments as well as a bottle containing the fetus of a pig. Sometimes the smell of manure rises from his landscapes, then again a Groningen bum toils along the steep banks of a Norwegian fjord. His self-portraits form a collection in themselves: in the mirror of the bathroom, in a glass display case surrounded by 'gohst of the past', or simply with a jar of pickles as a sign of his dignity”. With his work Pol is counted among the Northern Figuratives. Rein Pol exhibits a lot in the Netherlands. Abroad he exhibited in Germany, Norway, Poland, Switzerland and Indonesia. With the so-called Zwiggelte Group in France, the United States, Canada and Australia. Much of the painter's work is included in private collections. His paintings are also in the possession of, among others, the Drents Museum in Assen, the Smallingerland Museum in Drachten, the Free University of Amsterdam, the ING Collection and the Philips Collection...

Ernst Neuschul was born into a German-Jewish merchant family in the industrial town of Aussig/Ebe (Usti nad Labem) in northern Bohemia. His origins and ancestry had a decisive influence on the biography of this versatile and restless artist. The artist's life pulsates with the rhythm of his time. As a socially critical and highly political artist, he lived and worked at the focal points of European history. As a person and an artist, Neuschul embodied like few others of his time the impetuous, cosmopolitan and creative search for a new social and artistic reality in Europe between the two world wars. CLAUDE GAVEAU (1906 - 1970) A beautiful and large signed oil on canvas by the important french painter Claude Gaveau. The work is signed upper right and unlined and unrestored on its original canvas. Title: “Composition” Signature: Signed upper right Medium: Oil on original canvas Provenance: Private french collection Size: c. 24 x 29 inches unframed Claude Gaveau (1906 - 1970) is a French painter born in Neuilly-sur-Marne in 1940. The painter was born near Paris and studied there as well as in Belgium. He comes from a family of artists, his grandfather was the creator of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris. He is passionate since very young about painting and entered the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris in 1955 where he studied mural art for five years, stained glass, tapestry, mosaic and fresco. In 1960, he studied at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, becoming equally accomplished in oil painting, watercolor, drawing and lithography, pastel and gouache. Influenced by great Post Impressionist painters such as Paul Cézanne, George Braque and Raoul Dufy, Gaveau gets inspired as well by music and lyricism. His talent was quickly recognized, in 1963 he won his first prize and obtained a scholarship from the Academy of Antwerp, Belgium which allowed him to study Flemish painting in Brussels. In 1965, with only 25 years, he made his first solo exhibition at the Angle Aigu Gallery in Paris. His career took a real turn in 1968 when he was nominated for the "la Critique Parrainé" Award by the Saint Placide Gallery in Paris. A recurrent traveler, the landscapes he observes all around the world allow him to broaden his artistic palette. Other exhibitions of his work followed during the 1960’s and 1970’s in France with the Galerie Vauban in Dijon in 1967, 1968 and 1970; with the Galerie Saint Placide in Paris in 1968; with the Galerie Marc Hudier in Belfort in 1970; and three one-man shows with the Galerie La Belle Gabrielle in Paris in 1972, 1975 and 1978. "Ethnographic Still Life, " Edith Kramer, African Mask and Shofar, Art Therapy
By Edith Kramer
Located in New York, NY
Edith Kramer (1916 - 2014) Still Life with Mask, n.d. Oil on canvas 26 x 20 inches Signed and titled on the stretcher Provenance: Estate of the artist Kramer was born in Vienna, Austria-Hungary in 1916. At age 13 Kramer began art lessons with Friedl Dicker. Dicker was graduate of the Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany and was an artist and art teacher of note. Kramer studied drawing, sculpture and painting, and was influenced by the method for teaching art developed by Bauhaus artist Johannes Itten. It was in 1934 after Kramer graduated from Realgymnasium that she, then 18, followed Dicker to Prague to continue to study under her. During this time in Prague, Kramer witnessed the therapeutic impact of art when she assisted Dicker in teaching art to the children of political refugees. With the threat of Nazi invasion looming, Kramer took refuge in America in 1938. In New York City, she worked for three years teaching sculpture at a progressive school called the Little Red School House. During World War II Kramer worked as a machinist at a tool and die shop in the Soho district of New York City. She stayed after her shift to draw the other workers in their industrial setting. These works were rendered in the social realist style. In 1947 Kramer visited some of the earliest known artwork, in the caves at Lascaux. Kramer spoke of these cave paintings as an example of the universal language of art. At the age of 33 she returned to New York City, with hopes of making a living as an artist. Still in her 33rd year, Kramer was offered a job at Wiltwyck School for Boys, a school and residential treatment facility for children with behavioral and emotional needs. This job was arranged for her by psychoanalyst and board member at Wiltwyck, Dr. Viola Bernard. Dr. Bernard gave Kramer the title, "Art Therapist," noting that few teachers were willing to work with such challenging students. It was here that Kramer worked with disturbed boys, ages 8 through 13, for the following seven years. Raised in a family which was interested in psychoanalytic theory, Kramer herself became a follower of Sigmund Freud. Kramer especially believed in the concept of sublimation. Freudian theory describes sublimation as a process in which primitive urges coming from the id are transformed into socially productive activities that lead to gratification of the original urge. Kramer's training was in art, art education and psychoanalytically informed psychotherapy. Kramer believed sublimation to be one of the most vital goals of art therapy...
