About the Item

Robert E. Zappalorti Biography American, b. 1948 What is “sharp focus” drawing? Put very simply, it is a rendering with refined, precise line and tone to create a lifelike representation of the subject matter. It differs from other methods of drawing realistically, however, in that it creates an extremely clear, sharp almost photographically accurate image – hence the term “sharp focus.” So, I start all of my paintings with a “sharp focus” drawing and my still life reference is an actual set up in my studio. I take as much pride in the drawing as I do in the actual painting. My choices for the set ups are simple yet engaging and I look to less traditional objects to realistically portray a specific theme. I have tried to develop a theme of color, abstract shapes, and a clean crisp feeling in all my painting. The negative space pronounces the objects and it helps to achieve my desired results. I tend to work slowly, painstakingly observing the subject and trying to communicate the detail in a simple yet effective way. The joy in my work starts with my set up choice, the drawing, and the final color applications when it all comes to life. With each painting, I try to communicate a particular skill, from drawing/painting of ellipses, to space proportion, negative space, complexity, texture, reflection, and color.”

14th Street (Photo-Realist Oil Painting of Classic NYC Brick Building)
By Richard Britell
Located in Hudson, NY
Photo-realist oil painting of a classic brick building exterior in New York City 28 x 50 inches, oil on canvas painting Wire backing for easy hanging Unframed with white painted sides This contemporary, realistic oil painting of a New York City brick building exterior was painted by Richard Britell in 2019. Employing his mastery of the troupe l'oeil technique, Britell paints the smooth red colored stone building in extreme detail assuming a three-dimensional quality with close attention paid to shadow and perspective. This building is reminiscent of neo-classical architecture, popularized in the mid-late 1800's and the striking red exterior contrasts against the white stone window trim, further accentuating the painting's troupe l'oeil qualities. The painting on canvas is complete with wire on reverse for seamless hanging. About the artist: Richard Britell, a career painter, studied at Pratt Institute with Philip Pearlstein and Walter Erlebacher. His first show in NYC at Staempfli Gallery was sold out, and reviewed in the New York Times. Britell’s new works revolve around large, dreamy cityscapes tending toward abstraction. The artist currently lives in Pittsfield, MA.
