About the Item
Stephanie Hollenstein entstammt einer Vorarlberger Bauernfamilie und beginnt schon als Kind zu malen. Aufgrund ihrer Hirtenzeichnungen wird sie in die Münchner Kunstgewerbeschule aufgenommen und legt 1907 dort die Lehramtsprüfung ab. Anschließend leitet sie eine private Malschule, nebenbei bildet sie sich künstlerisch weiter. 1913 ist sie mit einem Stipendium in Rom und absolviert anschließend einen Pflegerinnenkurs.
Sie geht 1915 mit den Vorarlberger Standschützen in Männeruniform als Sanitätssoldat Stephan H. an die italienische Front und wird 1916 ins Kriegspressequartier berufen, wo sie Porträts von Offizieren und Mannschaften malt. Nach Kriegsende geht sie nach Wien, mietet ein Atelier und geht mit ihren Werken an die Öffentlichkeit. Stephanie Hollenstein malt vor allem Landschaften und biblische Motive, ist aber auch als Porträtmalerin bekannt und beteiligt sich an internationalen Ausstellungen.
Ab 1923 gehört sie der Vereinigung bildender Künstlerinnen Österreichs (VBKÖ) an. Nach der Spaltung 1926 tritt sie der Gruppe Wiener Frauenkunst bei.
1929 bis 1932 ist sie viel auf Reisen in Italien, Südtirol und der Schweiz und begeistert sich für den Männlichkeitskult des Faschismus. Schon in den 1930er Jahren wird sie auch Mitglied der in Österreich verbotenen NSDAP. Zwischen 1938 und 1943 ist sie Präsidentin der Nachfolgeorganisation der VBKÖ und damit eine der einflussreichsten Künstlerinnen während des Nationalsozialismus in Österreich. 1943 tritt sie aus gesundheitlichen Gründen zurück und stirbt ein Jahr darauf an Herzversagen.
