Provenance: Estate of the artist.
BIO
Arthur Rosenman Ross was a key figure in automotive design at General Motors during America's "Golden Age" of auto design, the 1930's through the 1950s.
He attended the Art Institute of Chicago from age 17, exhibiting a special interest for automotive renderings and the female figure.
In 1934, he changed his name from Rosenman to Ross, fearing his Jewish ancestry could prejudice his career prospects. At age 20, he turned down job offers from MGM Studios in Hollywood
and Duesenberg to work at General Motors alongside the Legendary Harley Earl in 1935.
He was hand picked by Mr. Earl and assigned to GM's War and Camouflage Division in 1937 through WW2.
It was during this pivotal period in which he executed some extraordinary military aircraft artworks, likely used between GM and America's military aeronautics companies in design preparation for WW2. General Motors played an important role in helping America's aircraft manufacturers preceding and during the war.
Just after the war in 1945, Mr. Ross was rewarded by GM, being made Chief Designer of Cadillac, then two years later becoming Chief at Oldsmobile until his retirement in 1959.
He was in large part responsible for some of GM's classic Cadillac designs such as the Cadillac Sixty Special, Fleetwood, LaSalle and GM's first concept car, the extraordinary Buick Y-Job.
Mr. Ross was an exceptionally charismatic and vivacious man who quite by chance, befriended His idol, Salvador Dali at GM in 1955.
They talked about art, cars and girls late into the evening, according to his son, Carter Ross.
He had a gift in rendering the erotic arts...

Mid Century French still life of dried flowers and corn in a vase
By Marcel Masson
Located in Woodbury, CT
This French mid-century Impressionist still life by Marcel Masson is a compelling celebration of rustic elegance and artistic spontaneity. The composition, featuring flowers and dried corn arranged in a dark, graceful vase, captures the beauty of natural simplicity through Masson’s distinctive painterly style. His textured brushstrokes and warm, earthy palette evoke a sense of authenticity and timeless charm, creating a piece that feels both intimate and universal.
For art collectors, this work represents a fine example of mid-century Impressionist still life, highlighting the artist’s ability to elevate everyday objects into subjects of beauty and contemplation. Marcel Masson’s expressive technique and harmonious use of color imbue the painting with depth and emotion, making it a valuable addition to any collection of 20th-century art.
Interior designers will appreciate the versatility and understated elegance of this painting. Still Life with Pears and Pomegranate by Mario Maserati. Signed and Dated 1927.
Located in Firenze, IT
Painting "Still Life with Pears and Pomegranate" by Mario Maserati
Title: Still Life with Pears and Pomegranate
Artist: Mario Maserati
Year: 1927
Dimensions: 74 cm x 67 cm
Signature: Signed and dated
Frame: Gilt wooden frame
The painting depicts a still life with pears and pomegranate, a typical subject for many artists exploring the beauty and magic simplicity of everyday objects. The composition is solid, with the fruit arranged in a balanced and harmonious manner, highlighted by meticulous attention to detail and color. The pears, apples and pomegranate are rendered with great realism, using light and shadow to give the scene depth and vibrancy.
Mario Maserati: Life, Studies, and Influences
Mario Maserati (1890-1981) was an Italian painter known for his contribution to realism in the interwar period. Born in Voghera, in the province of Pavia, he was part of a family that would leave a significant mark in the history of art and the automotive industry.
Mario Maserati studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, one of Italy's most prestigious institutions for artistic training. His studies at Brera allowed Maserati to develop a solid academic foundation that influenced his realistic style and attention to detail. Here, he had the opportunity to refine his technical skills and engage with the artistic movements of the time.
Early Influences and Artistic Development
During his training, Mario Maserati was influenced by Renaissance masters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio, known for their mastery of realism and use of light. However, one of the most significant influences on him was Paul Cézanne. Cézanne's approach to depicting reality, with his focus on geometric forms and colors, deeply impacted Maserati's work, pushing him to explore the complexity of nature through a modern lens.
In the 1920s, Italy experienced a period of artistic ferment in which various painters began to move away from abstraction and the experimental avant-gardes that had dominated the previous decades. These artists felt the need to return to a more faithful and comprehensible representation of reality, rediscovering the pleasure of detail and traditional technique.
Influence of the Twentieth Century Group.
An emblematic example of this return to realism is the movement known as Novecento Italiano, founded in Milan in 1922. This group of artists, including Mario Sironi, Achille Funi, and Carlo Carrà, aimed to create modern art rooted in classical Italian tradition. They sought to combine formal rigor and compositional order with renewed attention to everyday life and contemporary reality. The influence of this movement is also reflected in Mario Maserati's work, who shared an interest in a renewed realism and the valorization of traditional techniques.
Connection with Maserati Cars...
