The objects that one works with do seem to take on a life of their own, both by themselves and in their affinity for one another. They have a history, a patina, they may be new, or world-weary."
The artist continues, "My collection has been substantially whittled down to an essential few over the years, yet their combinations seem infinite. There is a lengthy and persistent shuffling, adding and eliminating to find that particular combination that suddenly takes on a rightness or self-sufficiency. It is interesting how one small object of the right color in the right place can facilitate such an event, or in another case the removal of something, a simplifying. Julia Adams comments: I use a variety of mixed media to produce my work – household glosses, spray paints, acrylics, inks and various printing techniques, rarely using a paintbrush! I like to apply paint with real freedom and spontaneity to produce paintings that have energy and depth, exploring my passion for surface quality, colour, texture and tactility.” “My series of ‘Interior Spaces’ paintings have been very popular and are constantly evolving. As a starting point I use a found image or one of my own photographs, adding or removing elements as I feel necessary to enhance the composition. I then start to play with my materials, constantly adding and subtracting. I will often include abstract stencilling to add a sense of drama, and introduce rivets to add further interest. I also enjoy including text, whether stencilled or found words in magazines.

During the Victorian and Edwardian era in Britain, it was very fashionable for ladies of aristocratic and wealthy backgrounds to draw and paint still lifes of flowers and plants that they had picked or seen in gardens. Many were highly accomplished and extremely talented artists, who sadly were not encouraged to exhibit due to society frowning upon such activities.
