Berges was born in the South East of France in the Pyrenees, not far from the Spanish border. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Toulouse, he was accepted at the Paris Academy. However, although his career took him to Paris, a remained very much attached to his homeland, a pious, rustic area with many chapel such as the one he portrayed here. Having studied with the Masters Eugène Cormon and Léon Bonnat , Bergès exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1907.
