Signed lower right, 'Carolyn Miller' (American, 20th century) and painted circa 1975. A substantial, Post-Impressionist oil still-life showing a view of various objects, including yellow orchids informally arranged in a purple vase, set on a table draped with a striped and floral tablecloth. A striking modernist work by this well-exhibited Colorado woman artist. Carolyn Miller first studied at the Art Students League of Denver as a student of Quang Ho, Mark Daily and subsequently, with Stephen Quiller, Richard Schmid, Fran Larsen and Carl Dalio. Signed lower left, 'Davenport' for Jill Davenport (American, 1930-2019) and painted circa 1985; titled, verso, 'Attic Series- Yellow'. Framed dimensions: 28 x 1.5 x 25 inches. Born in Kansas, Jill Davenport moved to California in 1963. A lifelong artist and art enthusiast, she raised a family before focusing, in her early forties, on her vocation as an artist. In 1976, she graduated from Sonoma State University with a Bachelors in Art, subsequently continuing her studies with the California Post-Impressionist, Maury Lapp. During this period, her work was primarily representational and her favored medium was oil. "Sliced Bread" is an oil painting, and mixed media collage on canvas. It is a still life on a table top of a piece of bread with a knife in it sitting on a napkin, an old metal pitcher with a spoon resting on it and a spoon on the table between the pitcher and the bread. Behind these objects in the foreground is a mysterious object. It is complied of many colorful rectangles, and the top of it is a dark neutral grey. It could be a piece of cake that has just been cut, bursting with flavor, or it could be a tiled or woven box with a peaked lid, possibly a bread box? Behind the table against an off white wall are 20 rectangles. Some of these are solid blocks of color, others are drawings on paper of landscapes and people that bring to mind postcards pinned up on a wall.
