A resident of the Alamo Heights district, his primary employment was salesman at Joske's Department Store in San Antonio [San Antonio City Directory]. In the 1920s, he married Frances Rose, but they apparently had no surviving children. He was active as an artist in the mid 1900s through at least the 1960s. He is best known for landscapes in an impressionistic style. He signed his works with a simple "C. Hoppe" and sometimes included a brief descriptive phrase on the back of the painting or in pen & ink on a paper label with an inscription about the painting or the person to whom it was presented. Some of his original frames appear to be home-crafted. He is reported to have studied under several more-notable Texas artists who worked in the San Antonio area, including Porfirio Salinas, Robert Wood, Jose Arpa, and Julian Onderdonk. This artwork "Landscape with People Fishing" 1978, is an oil painting on hard board by Polish/American artist Morris Katz, 1932-2010. It is signed and dated at the lower right corner by the artist. The artwork (Hard Board) size is 20 x 24 inches, framed size is 28 x 31.75 inches. Framed in original wooden gold frame, with fabric liner and gold trim. The artwork is in excellent condition, the frame is in very good condition. About the artist: On May 9th, 1988, the New York artist set a new world record by painting a 12- by 16-inch canvas of a child in the snow in just half a minute. (It took an additional eight seconds to frame it.) And that wasn’t the only distinction granted to Katz by the Guinness Book of World Records—his name appeared alongside Pablo Picasso’s under the heading for “Most Prolific Painters.” The Spanish master is estimated to have completed some 13,500 paintings in his life; when Katz died in 2010 at age 78, he was credited with 225,000. Katz’s preposterously productive career began in the small Polish village where he was born in 1932. He started studying under a German painter at age 13, but following World War II he earned a diploma in carpentry instead. In 1949, at the age of 17, he travelled to the United States. It was there that he picked up a paintbrush again, while studying at the Art Students League of New York and showing in the Village. “Soon, I decided I was good enough—compared to others, excellent enough—to make my living as an artist,” he said. It was during those years that he developed the techniques that would eventually land him in the record books. He tossed out his paintbrushes and replaced them with palette knives and toilet paper, which he used to stipple the paint. “Soon I picked up speed,” Katz said. “If you know which way you’re travelling, then you can run.” He made art in bulk, buying up canvases by the thousands and paint by the gallon. He went through some 10,000 rolls of toilet paper per year; he often wore out palette knives. Katz branded his method as “instant art.” Charles Salzberg, writing in New York magazine in 1978, urged readers, “Think of him, if you will, as the McDonald’s of the art world”—fast, cheap, and ubiquitous. He wore a green beret, paint-splattered pants, and a shirt emblazoned with the words “Morris Katz - World’s Most Prolific Artist.” It was a title that came with a price—he worked 18-hour days into his 60s, sometimes from his Greenwich Village studio and other times as a performer at hotels across the Catskills. He would often visit three different hotels in the same day, waking up at 7 a.m. and returning home as late as 1 a.m. His show was as much about the painting as it was the one-liners: “These are the highlights—you can tell because they’re high up on the painting,” he might say. Audiences gobbled up the jokes and the works, often paying less than $50 for a painting. “I give them a fresh painting like a fresh bagel,” he said. Photographer David M. Spindel first met Katz on assignment. “They’d call him mashugana—that’s the Yiddish word for a little bit crazy,” he told Artsy. The pair soon became friends, and Spindel ended up attending several of the artist’s hotel shows. “There were a lot of people from the hotel who were sitting in the room and he set up his easel and his toilet paper and paints and knocked out paintings one after another,” Spindel said. “Just a couple of minutes for each painting, usually. If he was kibitzing with the people in the audience then it took a lot longer. He was always clowning around.” His act was ready-made for television; he appeared on 60 Minutes, David Letterman, and Oprah, among other programs. And Katz didn’t just make instant art—he taught it as well. In 1987, the New Yorker sent a writer to attend one of his speed-painting classes at the Notre Dame School on West 79th Street. A dozen eager students watched in admiration as he whipped up a mountain landscape, asking for advice on how, exactly, to hold their toilet paper for maximum artistic effect. Following her first American solo exhibition in 1909, a critic observed, “There is not a dull canvas in the entire collection and everything is interesting”.1 Thirty-five years later, Historical Records published her biography in the almanac Prominent Women of New York.2 Regardless of her success, Peterson remained pragmatic as she always sought to challenge herself with new ideas and techniques. She spent a lifetime immersed in the practice of painting; as a student, teacher, and gifted artist. Peterson was a painter with little interest in self-promotion or the conventional achievements of an artist, as a result there has only been a moderate body of scholarship written about her posthumously. Peterson’s legacy is her brilliant oeuvre of impressionistic paintings, held by collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art. "Jennie Christine Peterson was born in Elgin, Illinois in 1876. From an early age Peterson, who was known throughout her life as Jane, showed a natural talent for drawing. As a teenager, having received no formal art training, Peterson sat the art aptitude test conducted by the Pratt Institute. The results were promising and, in 1895, Peterson moved to New York to study at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Peterson thrived at Pratt as a conscientious student, although it was not an easy time for her financially. When her money ran low Peterson gave art lessons to other students, and also earned some income through the sale of her paintings in student exhibitions. When Peterson graduated in 1901, she began working as Drawing Supervisor of Public Schools in Brooklyn. She also continued her art education taking classes at the Art Students League. Between 1904 and 1906 Peterson worked as an art teacher in New York, Massachusetts, and Maryland. In 1907, Peterson sailed to Europe where she visited artists and museums in France, Holland, and Italy. She found Europe to be more socially progressive for women artists and decided to stay and continue her art education. While in Europe, Peterson studied under Frank Brangwyn at the London School of Art, before relocating to Paris where she received instruction from Jacque-Emile Blanche, Charles Cottet, and Claudio Castelucho. Throughout 1908, Peterson was extremely productive, creating many works in her spare time while also taking on portrait commissions to augment her income. She lived in rooms in Montparnasse located around the corner from Gertrude Stein’s salon, where on Saturday evening artists and art enthusiasts would gather to view and discuss Stein’s seminal collection of Modern art. Attending these events Peterson surrounded herself with powerful art luminaries such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, André Derain, and Henri Rousseau. Charles Henry Miller (American, 1842-1922) Untitled (New York Landscape), c. 1900 Oil on canvas laid on foam 6 1/8 x 10 5/8 in. Signed lower left: C.H.M. Charles Henry Miller was a noted artist and painter of landscapes from Long Island, New York. The American poet Bayard Taylor called him, "The artistic discoverer of the little continent of Long Island." Miller was educated at Mount Washington Collegiate Institute, and graduated in medicine at the New York Homeopathic Institute in 1864. Before his graduation, he had occasionally painted pictures, and in 1860 he exhibited The Challenge Accepted at the National Academy of Design, in New York City. He lived in Queens at the summer estate, Queenslawn, originally purchased by his parents. He went abroad in 1864 and again in 1867, and was a pupil in the Bavarian Royal Academy at Munich under the instruction of Adolf Lier. After the 1874 death of his father, Jacob Miller, who was a wealthy architect and builder, Miller received a large inheritance that allowed him to paint as an independent artist for the remainder of his long life. He worked seriously and exhibited regularly, including at international exhibitions. The majority of his oil paintings depict Long Island subjects, especially those in and around Queens Village. Fed up with the development of the eastern part of Queens (present-day Nassau County), he began to spend part of his summers in East Marion, Long Island, c. 1910. Here he spent his time sketching and painting the surrounding areas. In 1885 he published The Philosophy of Art in America, using the pseudonym Carl De Muldor (he was descended from the De Muldor family). His work was recognized: in 1873, he was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design and an academician in 1875. He served as president of the New York Art Club in 1879 and of the American Committee at the Munich International Exposition in 1883. Legacy and honors • In 1910 Miller founded the Queens Borough Allied Arts & Crafts Society. • A New York City public school, Queens P.S. 33, was once named for him. • 1878, gold medal awarded by the Massachusetts Charitable Association • 1885, gold medal at the World's Exposition in New Orleans. On his platform in the Casino, Lemos did paintings of redwoods, still lifes, forest fires, beach scenes, and marines. Many of his oils were done on redwood slabs which were popular with the tourists; in the early days these paintings sold for one dollar and up depending on the size of the work. After his vision failed and he was unable to paint, his last years were mostly spent fishing off the Municipal Pier with a friend who baited his hook for him because he could no longer see. In the March 27, 1941 Santa Cruz Sentinel News Lemos reminisced, "Them were the days when the Boardwalk was only twelve feet long and when business got slow I picked up my shotgun and went across the street and shot ducks where the Casa del Rey Hotel now stands." Her eldest son, William, was a naïve still life, landscape, and mural painter. As a young boy in New York, he would wander the streets, earning money for the family, by ‘painting on request.’ At age 26, William moved to San Francisco, California. He opened an art studio and kept it running until he moved to Santa Cruz with his wife, Mabel, in 1896.
