Antique painting representing a still life of flowers in a richly embossed bronze vase, work of a 17th century author, from the circle/workshop of Willem van Aelst (Delft 1627 - Amsterdam, after 1683), oil on canvas (78 cm. x 65, framed 95 x 83 cm). Provenance: Berwick House, Shropshire (James Watson Collection) - photo dwelling in detail Newbury, Berkshire, Dreweatts 1759, Old Master, British and European Art 05/27/2021 link In this sumptuous still life we see a precious classical vase in embossed metal, animated by two protruding harpies with the function of handles, which collects inside a valuable floral bouquet, placed on a stone shelf with a worked edge. The elaborate metal artefact, as protagonist as the floral varieties it contains, has a richly detailed decoration that takes inspiration from the Mannerist taste. All evoke the magnificent studies of vases carried out between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries by Polidoro da Caravaggio. The work, which comes from the important Victorian Berwick House, in Shropshire, owned by the English collector James Watson, bears a traditional reference to the circle of the Flemish painter Willem van Aelst (Delft 1627 - Amsterdam, after 1683), one of the more multifaceted naturamortists of the seventeenth century. The beautiful composition combines the detailed Flemish style with the refinement that the author learned in Tuscany. He began his artistic career as a pupil of his uncle Evert van Aelst; in 1645 he first went to France and from there, in 1649, he went on to Italy, where he settled in Florence, at the court of the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinando II de 'Medici, where he began to specialize in the genre of still life. His elegant compositions enjoyed the favors of the grand-ducal family and numerous works can still be found in Palazzo Pitti in Florence. Around 1656 he returned to Amsterdam where he remained for the rest of his life. There too he enjoyed great success with his still lifes. Among his pupils who later became famous are Maria van Oosterwijck, Rachel Ruysch, Nicolas Lachtropius, Elias van den Broeck and Simon Verelst. His works can be found in the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, in the Washington National Art Gallery and in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The painting is in good condition and is accompanied by a beautiful gilded frame. The work, like all our objects, is sold with a certificate of photographic authenticity in accordance with the law.
