Contemporary-style frame
This delightful artwork depicts a lady in a white dress with a parasol as she stands on a jetty on the banks of a lake. On the lake, a boat and its sailor can be seen heading towards a wider expanse of water. In the foreground, a copse of trees lean over the water, hiding the mountains that are just visible in the far left background.
The broad brush strokes of this image create a sense of a hazy memory. Despite their size, the brushstrokes convey an enormous amount of detail, especially in relation to light. The reflections on the surface of the water are depicted beautifully, and the light material of the lady’s dress and parasol is rendered masterfully.
William Palin
William Mainwaring Palin was born in Staffordshire in 1862, the son of an engraver. He was apprenticed at the Wedgewood pottery firm for five years before winning a scholarship to study at the National Art Training School (the precursor to the Royal College of Art). Whilst there, he was sent to Milan for seven months to copy Bernardino Luini’s frescoes in the churches of San Maurizio Maurizio and Sant’Eustorgio, and was later sent to Rome to copy three tapestries after designs by Raphael in the Vatican.
After finishing his studies at the National Art Training School, Palin studied at the Academie Julian for two years under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Joseph Lefebvre. In the 1880s, he began to exhibit at the Royal Academy, where he would show his works 44 times across his life. In the 1890s, Palin helped decorate the McEwan Hall at the University of Edinburgh, and was recommended to the Building Committee for the South Kensington Science and Art Department.
Palin became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1905 and was Honorary Secretary before becoming Vice President in 1914. He exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, the Paris Salon and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
In his later life, Palin painted a number of scenes of Walberswick in Suffolk. He passed away in London in July of 1947.
