The Boat in Martigues, France
Located in London, GB
'The Boat in Martigues', oil on canvas, by Marie de Nivouliès de Pierrefort (circa 1910). Martigues is a small port town just northwest of Marseille in the South of France. Its nickname is the Provençal Venice. Further eastward down the coast is the town of Toulon where the artist was born in 1879. Nivouliès depicts a charming sailboat tied to the small pier yet with an unfurled sail. It looks to be a wondrous day along the Mediterranean, the kind we can always dream about. The painting is over one hundred years old and is in fair condition, yet recently brought back to life by an art restoration professional. Elegantly framed, it is stabilised now for decades into the future. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying the listing. Upon request, a video may be provided of the artwork.
About the Artist: Although she was a direct descendant of the counts of de Pierrefort, Marie de Nivouliès de Pierrefort's (1879-1968) family was very poor. In spite of the poverty, Pierrefort attended a Catholic school run by nuns, obtaining a scholarship from the School of Fine Arts of Paris. While still a student, she attended workshops of great Impressionist masters such as Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) and Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947). In 1910 she won a travel award from the school and traveled to Tunisia where she painted several Mediterranean landscapes.
In 1938 the painter moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she painted the beautiful landscapes seen from her window. In Rio, Pierrefort had two individual exhibitions, both at the National Museum of Fine Arts, in the years 1946 and 1956.
Although widowed in 1944, Pierrefort decided not to return to France until 1950. She remained there until 1959 when she definitively returned to Brazil. Her atelier in the neighbourhood of Glória was frequented by many emerging artists who learned the techniques of impressionism from her. Afterwards, Pierrefort painted for almost a decade in Brazil until she passed away in 1968 in Rio. After her death, many canvases were found in her studio but had been damaged or destroyed by humidity and by the intervention of her many cats. The painter Sergio Telles...

“Headed to Market, 1916”
Located in Southampton, NY
Original drawing of a woman heading to market by the well known American artist, Everett Shinn. Mixed media work created with charcoal, pastel and gouache. Signed with the artist’s initials lower right and dated 1916. Condition is very good. Under glass. Matted and in a period gold frame with restorations. Overall framed measurements are 23.5 by 17.25 inches. Provenance: A New York City estate.
Everett Shinn (1876 – 1953)
Everett Shinn, a realist artist associated with the Ashcan School and member of “The Eight” was born in New Jersey in 1876. After showing an aptitude for the arts as a child, at age 15, Shinn was enrolled at the Spring Garden Institute in Philadelphia. He quickly moved on to classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and by the age of 17, he was working as a staff artist for the Philadelphia Press. While working at the Press, Shinn befriended fellow artists William J. Glackens, George Luks, and John Sloan. This group, with Robert Henri and Joseph Laub, established the Charcoal Club, a social and intellectual sort of alternative art school.
In 1897, Shinn moved to New York City to work as an illustrator at the New York World. He became fascinated by the drama of the city. While visiting Europe in 1900, Shinn took interest in the work of the Impressionists, particularly those of Degas. Degas’ influence can be read in Shinn’s depictions of American theater. From his acquaintances in the theater world, Shinn began to paint decorative “rococo revivalist” murals in the homes of the wealthy elite. He also worked extensively in pastel, portraying the rough life of the city. In 1908, Shinn exhibited alongside his Charcoal Club associates, with the addition of Arthur B. Davies, Ernest Lawson, and Maurice Prendergast...

Beautiful oil on canvas painting by the American Impressionist artist Louis H. Richardson. Signed lower right and dated 1917. Overall framed measurements in original Newcomb Macklin frame 27.5 by 31.25 inches.
Louis H Richardson [1853-1923]
American Impressionist :
Louis H. Richardson was born in New Bedford, MA, where he lived and worked until his death in 1923. Richardson was a self-taught Impressionist artist, most known for his sensitive paintings of the landscape surrounding New Bedford and the Dartmouth area. From his shanty shack studio at Salters Point in South Dartmouth, he would paint the wetlands and feature water, trees, the sky and land. In 1917, Richardson was part of a two-man show in New York City with artist Clifford W. Ashley at the Arlington Art Galleries on Madison Avenue. Of his show, The New Bedford Sunday Standard wrote: “His style is so absolutely his own that the simple mention of his name recalls to mind vividly the salt marshes, the soft browns of silent reaches near the sea, wind-blown inlets, flying clouds. … Some of it reaches a height of charm and truth that it would be impossible to surpass.” Richardson believed in the art community and founded the New Bedford Arts Club and its successor the New Bedford Fine Arts Society.
When not painting, Richardson worked at the New Bedford Water Company and later as a plumbing inspector for the city’s Board of Health. He was an avid baseball player and would be known as “the Babe Ruth of New Bedford.”
On his death, the local newspaper declared him “one of the best-known artists in New Bedford” and “one of the art pioneers in building up a more widespread appreciation of art in the community.”
His work is in the permanent collection of the New Bedford Whaling Museum...

Hannig, born in Hirschberg, Germany on 27 February 1883, came to America with his parents at the age of seven. He attended school in the southwest suburbs before the family settled in Chicago. Young Henry enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts where Lawton Parker became his mentor. He made ends meet by working in industrial design and illustration.
By 1908 he was a pupil in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where students followed the traditional European drawing curriculum, beginning with the copying of master engravings and drawing after plaster casts, then concentrating on the nude figure. Students worked toward the goal of winning various academic prizes. One of Hannig's fellow students was Louis Ritman...

This drawing is a particularly interesting and touching example of Henri Ottmann's art. It shows his special technique, which gives priority to a kind of blur, and in this case it serves very well this scene of intimacy as if captured by stealth.
Henry Ottmann was born on 10 April 1877 in Ancenis.
He made his debut at the Salon La Libre Esthétique in Brussels in 1904 and took part in the Salon des Indépendants in Paris from 1905, the Salon d'Automne, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Tuileries.

Lora Webb Nichols was born in 1883 and grew up in the small mining town of Encampment, Wyoming. At the age of 16 Lora received her first camera and from that moment and for the next few decades she produced work that is both stunning in its singular voice and revealing in the world it opens up for us.
At first Nichols photographed her family, friends, and the landscape around Encampment, but when the town experienced a copper mining boom Nichols expanded her scope to become a photographer for hire shooting portraits and industrial photographs. When the boom collapsed, Nichols took the risk of opening her own business in Encampment - The Rocky Mountain Studio - which opened in 1925. The studio ran for ten years, accumulating 24,000 negatives that illustrate the lives and environment of the people living in and around the town while creating a distinctive and surprising body of work. If one was to attempt an analogy – Nichols’ pictures fit somewhere between Lartigue and Lange - joyful and generous while objectively intimate. In particular what seems to distinguish Nichols’ work is the way she sees the world from a female perspective. As Vince Aletti...

"Old Caravels near La Rabida Convento" in Spain - Palos de la Frontera - Pencil
Located in Soquel, CA
Delicate and precise drawing by Lester G. Hornby (American, 1882-1956). Several boats are depicted at Convento de Santa María de la Rábida. The drawing is highly detailed, with the confident marks of an accomplished artist. Two buildings can be see to the left hand side of the drawing - a wharf house and the La Rabida Monastery. A man tends his fishing boat and few other boats are anchored in the water, including two caravels (a small, fast Spanish or Portuguese sailing ship of the 15th–17th centuries.)
The Friary of La Rábida (in full, Spanish: Convento de Santa María de la Rábida) is a Franciscan friary in the southern Spanish town of Palos de la Frontera, in the province of Huelva and the autonomous region of Andalucia.
Signed "L. G. Hornby" in the lower left corner.
Presented in a new grey mat with foamcore backing.
Original tag from Albert Roullier Art Galleries in Chicago has been preserved on verso.
Mat size: 11"H x 14"W
Paper size: 10"H x 9"W
Lester George Hornby (American, 1882-1956) received his early training at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Students League in New York. He then journeyed to Paris where he developed his technique further at the major art academies there. Hornby’s progress was rapid; he received his first international recognition in Paris in the prestigious Salon d’Automne of 1907.
Completely captivated by Paris and the French countryside, Hornby spent most of his productive years in France, returning intermittently to America. In his later years, he played an active role as teacher and artist in the Rockport art colony. He lived there with Bertha Grover Goodrich, his last wife. They lived in Rockport, Massachusetts until his death in 1956. Together they built the "old on purpose" house using old materials to build a "new" "old" house. Lester is the one who gave the name "Motif #1" to the old fish house that has become so famous.
During WWI Hornby was a war correspondent. As did most artists at the time who did illustrations in relation to the war, Hornby had to have war- related pictures approved by the government before being published. In one case the war department refused to give permission because they felt his illustration was so accurate and well done that the enemy would have access to too much information. Hornby worked in the trenches with the men and his work reflects this.
At a Philadelphia exhibit of color etchings in 1909 the critic called Hornby "the foremost exponent of this branch of graphic art that America has produced.” The critic Rowland Thomas wrote in 1910 "Hornby is beyond doubt a master etcher with such power of eye and hand as our generation has hardly known before. Not since Whistler posed with the Universe on his needle point has anyone scratched on solid metal lines of such electrifying, such insolently simple conciseness as these- a new old Paris leaps transfigured and revealed for those who will glory in her."
Boston critic W.H. Downes found "Hornby's etchings among the best and most artistic being done by any American, and some of the Marne set are masterpieces." A 1928 exhibit of watercolors at the Vose Gallery in Boston won a rave from critic A.J. Philpott "He has been compared to Joseph Pennell but that is not a fair comparison. Hornby is a much more versatile genius than Pennell ever was!"
Hornby's work is in the permanent collections of 21 museums worldwide, including the Addison Gallery of American Art, Boston Public Library, Boston Athenauem, Art Institute of Chicago, Detroit Institute of Arts, Rhode Island School of Design, Yale University, Rockport Art Association, and Philadelphia Museum of Art.
