At the Royal Academy of Art in Munich, Vytlacil met and befriended Hans Hofmann, becoming his teaching assistant. After returning to the US in 1928, Vytlacil became a member of the Art Students League faculty and successfully persuaded Hofmann to teach at the League as well. In 1936, he became a co-founder of the American Abstract Artists group and taught at Queens College in New York; the College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California; Black Mountain College in North Carolina; and the Art Students League. Peter Macchiarini "Brooch Drawing" c. 1950s Pencil on paper Site 3.5"x3.5" silver carved wood frame 14.75"x16.75" Studio stamp lower left Was born to Italian parents on the Wohler Ranch, a hop yard and vineyard spread on the Russian river near Santa Rosa, Sonoma County on August 27, 1909. I attended grammar school and high schools in Sonoma County until the age of fourteen at which time my parents returned to Italy. There I took preliminary courses in the Italian language and having decided on an artistic career, took the entry examinations for the Art Academy Pietrasanta, Province of Lucca, and was accepted. At the Academy I received basic training in marble carving, clay modeling, architectural drawing and general sciences. In 1928 I returned to the United States and was gainfully employed as a stonecarver with several San Francisco Bay Area firms. I continued my art studies in San Francisco at the California School of Fine Arts, taking night courses. In 1936, I worked on projects under Beniamino Bufano and Ralph Stackpole...

Dennis Eugene Norman Burton was a Canadian modernist who was born in Lethbridge, Ontario. He attended the Ontario College of Art from 1952 to 1956, and worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as a graphic designer until 1960. Inspired by a 1955 exhibition of the “Painters Eleven” at Toronto’s Hart House, as well as American Abstract Expressionist artists such as Robert Motherwell, Jack Tworkov, and Willem de Kooning, Burton shifted his focus toward abstraction in the mid-1950s. Burton showed with the famed Isaacs Gallery in Toronto, becoming one of the youngest members on the gallery’s roster. A talented musician, he also played saxophone in the Artist’s Jazz Band in Toronto - a pioneering Canadian free-jazz group...

The Dead Tiger
Located in Fairlawn, OH
The Dead Tiger Ink and watercolor on paper, 1955 Signed and dated in ink (see photo) Condition: Aging to the entire sheet (it's 78 years old) Image/Sheet size: 18 1/4 x 23 inches One of a series of watercolors Dehner created in the Hudson Valley and gave to a patron. They are variations of the same composition with differing colors. Titled by the artist in pencil verso. Provenance: Gift of the artist Private Collection, Hudson Valley, NY Dorothy Dehner (1901-1994) Painter, sculptor, art writer, and poet, Dorothy Dehner explored abstraction, cubism, realism and surrealism during her artistic journey. Early in her career she was known for painting and for large-cast metal sculptures, but in the 1950s and 1960s, turned increasingly to wood cut into hard-edge geometric shapes. From 1950, she lived primarily in New York City. Dorothy Dehner was born in 1901 in Cleveland, Ohio, but, as a teenager in 1916, moved to Pasadena, California when her parents died. Her artistic interests were initially in acting. She majored in drama at UCLA for the school year of 1922-1923, then moved to New York City to study acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Art. After travel to Europe in France, Italy and Switzerland in 1925, where she saw Cubist and Fauve paintings as well as the great art of the ages, Dehner entered the Art Students League to study sculpture, but switched to painting because she felt the former was bound in academic formula. She studied drawing with Kimon Nicolaides...

In 1904, after leaving the Ecole des Arts et Métiers, Strasbourg, he visited Paris and published his poetry for the first time. From 1905 to 1907, Arp studied at the Kunstschule, Weimar, and in 1908 went to Paris, where he attended the Académie Julian. In 1909, he moved to Switzerland and in 1911 was a founder of the Moderner Bund group there. The following year, he met Robert and Sonia Delaunay in Paris and Vasily Kandinsky in Munich. Arp participated in the Erste deutsche Herbstsalon in 1913 at the gallery Der Sturm, Berlin. After returning to Paris in 1914, he became acquainted with Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Jacob, Amadeo Modigliani, and Pablo Picasso. In 1915, he moved to Zurich, where he executed collages and tapestries, often in collaboration with his future wife Sophie Taeuber (who became known as Sophie Taeuber-Arp after they married in 1922). In 1916, Hugo Ball...

Jean Dubuffet Lithograph Art Brut "I. Traces grotesques"
Located in Detroit, MI
SALE ONE WEEK ONLY "I. Traces grotesques" is an Artist’s Proof Lithograph. “Proofs” are either pulled or printed, and the artist has the option to work out the color and quality issues as they come out of the process. The only real difference between the two is the restricted quantity of prints bearing the AP designation and not the quality of the print. This lithograph is signed and titled by the artist, Jean Dubuffet, which indicates his complete satisfaction with the print. It is from 1958 and a perfect example of his style, “Art Brut.” His idealistic approach to aesthetics embraced what is called “low art”, art by non-academically trained artists. It is sometimes referred to as “outsider art.” He did study briefly at the Academie Julian, Paris, but eventually followed his own aesthetics which eschewed traditional standard of beauty in favor of what he believed to be a more authentic and humanistic approach to image-making. This lithograph expresses the beauty he found in the meandering spontaneous black line. Jean Dubuffet began painting at the age of seventeen and studied briefly at the Academie Julian, Paris. He painted off and on for the next 20 years. It was not until 1942 in the midst of WWII in France that he began the work which has distinguished him as an outstanding innovator in postwar Europe. It is said of his work that “he looked to the margins of the everyday – the art of prisoners, psychics, the uneducated, and the institutionalized – to liberate his own creativity and coining the term ‘Art Brut’.” Art Brut is a French term that translates as ‘raw art’, to describe art such as graffiti or naïve art which is made outside the academic tradition of fine art. His paintings from the early forties in brightly colored oils were soon followed by works in which he employed such unorthodox materials as cement, plaster, tar and asphalt-scraped, craved and cut and drawn upon with a rudimentary, spontaneous line. Dubuffet worked in France and exhibited from the early forties on. He was included in the 1946 Pierre Matisse...

Landscape Abstraction - Mid-Century - Twenty Paintings in One
Located in Miami, FL
At the height of Abstraction Expressionism, overlooked Academic Artist John Atherton created a wonderfully complex painting that embodies many of the characteristics of what was going on in Mid-Century American Art. The work is simultaneously abstract as it is representational. Like a Bento Box, it's divided into sections by dividers. On close inspection, each section stands on it's own as a beautiful mini-painting yet coalesces as part of the whole. From a distance, it is eye-pleasing, but as the view gets closer and closer, new structures and details gloriously reveal themselves. This is an important painting and not unlike the work of Joaquín Torres-García. It was done in the last year of the artist's life. Signed lower right. Canvas is relined. Framed size: 30 x 41.25. The work is best viewed with top gallery lights to bring out color. Atherton exhibited at the famous Julien Levy Gallery in New York and his fine art is mainly associated with Magic Realism. He participated in the seminal 1943 Museum of Modern Art exhibition, American Realists and Magic Realists. The Museum of Modern Art has 4 Atherton paintings in its collection. As an Illustrator, Atherton did covers for the Saturday Evening Post, Fortune and Holiday Magazine...
