A really superb plate with lifetime impression, from the collection "Sechzehn Holzscnitte nach Gemälden Arnold Böcklin (Meisterwerke der Holzschneidekunst, Neue Folge Heft V), leipzig, verlagsbuchhandlung von J.J. Weber", printed in 1898 by J.J. Weber. All the plates of this print suite are woodcuts on the head wood and taken from Böcklin's most famous paintings. This is an original 19th century hand-colored folio-sized lithograph entitled "Campylopterus Cuvieri" (Cuvier's Sabre-wing Hummingbird) by John Gould, as plate 52 published in his "A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds", published in London between 1849 and 1861. The print, which was drawn by Gould and Henry Richter and lithographed by Hullmandel and Walton, depicts two mostly green-colored hummingbirds with brown wings perched on a branch of a tropical long leafed plant, possibly bamboo with ferns in the background. This beautiful Gould hand-colored hummingbird lithograph is augmented with gum-arabic paint. It is in excellent condition, other than some discoloration at the edges of the upper and lower right corners. The original descriptive text page from Gould's 19th century publication is included. Paul Huet (3 October 1803 – 8 January 1869) was a French painter and printmaker born in Paris. He studied under Gros and Guerin. He met the English painter Richard Parkes Bonington in the studio of Gros, where he studied irregularly from 1819 to 1822. Bonington's example influenced Huet to reject neoclassicism and instead paint landscapes based on close observation of nature. The British landscape paintings exhibited in the Salon of 1824 were a revelation to Huet, who said of Constable's work: "It was the first time perhaps that one felt the freshness, that one saw a luxuriant, verdant nature, without blackness, crudity or mannerism."[4] Huet's subsequent work combined emulation of the English style with inspiration derived from Dutch and Flemish old masters such as Rubens, Jacob van Ruisdael...

This marble bust, signed S. Albano dated 1890, belongs to his adult age and to the last years of his life, when he was already very requested and he had a prolific workshop in Florence. It represents a young peasant, portrayed with a simple handkerchief covering her hair and a shirt opened on the neckline to let us a see the crucifix cross, symbol of a sincere and innocent faith (the necklace appears in other is Albano’s works, like in the artist’s sister, Evangeline, Marguerite busts and in the Marguerite sculpture, all of them in private collections). The simple and tender subject is made with an exquisite technique, still quoting De Gubernatis “he can be enviable because he gives to the modelled flesh a singular transparency”, as we can see in the delicacy of the cheeks, nose, chin. His skills especially appear in the details: the locks naturally coming out, the light signs of the eyebrows, handkerchief with his thin folding line, the collar of the shirt bending on itself, the use of the drill for the rendering of the curly hair. About the artwork The drawing depicts a view of the woods which, as if sharpening the visual focus, remains diffuse at the edges and does not allow the viewer to locate himself in the picture. As a result, the landscape appears to be an apparition, but at the same time it is given real substance by the solidity of the massive arched bridge made of quarry stone. As the main motif of the painting, the bridge, which blends in with nature like an archaic relic, also acts as a visual guide, drawing attention to the white, raised waters of the stream and the surrounding vegetation. The diffusion of perception that takes place there, however, draws the eye back to the bridge and thus to the overall view. This movement initiating a constant alternation of diffusion and concretion, which is the specific tension of the painting that brings the landscape to life. The materialisation and dematerialisation, however, does not take place solely through the eye's wandering through the picture; it is simultaneously linked to the viewer's approach to and distance from the picture, which loses its richness of detail precisely in the close-up, only to reconfigure itself with increasing distance. In this work, which dates from Graessel's studies in Karlsruhe, the artist reflects on the emergence of pictorial objectivity. Here, however, nature is more than a mere motif. The real connection between culture and nature is symbolically expressed by the choice of green paper. The drawing is an impressive testimony to Graessel's mastery of the sprezzatura with which he skilfully applies the most abstract of strokes, which visibly merge towards the centre of the picture. The signature and the exact date prove that Graessel gave this work more than the character of a mere sketch. About the artist Franz Graessel grew up in an environment that was to nourish his later key motifs: his parents' house was a mill. After attending the Karlsruhe Academy of Art from 1878 to 1884, where he studied under Carl Hoff, Graessel continued his training at the Munich Academy from 1886 to 1890 as a pupil of Wilhelm von Lindenschmidt. Trained primarily in genre and portrait painting, he initially portrayed the life of Black Forest farmers. From 1894 he turned increasingly to animal painting, concentrating on the depiction of ducks and geese, which earned him the nickname 'Enten-Graessel'.
