Abstract Photograph Post Soviet Russian Avant Garde Solarized Non Conformist
Located in Surfside, FL
Valentin Samarine started doing abstract painting in the 60s, and abstract photography in the 70s. He moved fairly easily from one to the other. It is in a perfectly logical sense: Valentin relies in both cases on a model of spontaneous creation, implemented in the post-war years in European painting, whether it is abstract expressionism (USA), action art (England) or tachism (France) . Valentin Samarine methodically destroys, at all stages, the mechanistic function of the photographic process. In Leningrad, he had experimented and put a dose of unpredictability at the time of the shooting and during the development. In Paris, Valentin went from the negative to the process of revelation of the positive, by giving the "representation the maximum of possibilities for possible metamorphoses, without imposing anything on it, in particular with regard to the range of colors. the metatechnics of contact between the still invisible, floating or spinning jets, like sleds coming down from the mountain. " (V. Samarine) This deeply respectful, almost religious attitude towards the process of creation and all its components allows the artist to approach the limits of three-dimensional space, beyond which vibrate the parapsychological, transpersonal and metaphysical dimensions. Insofar as metareality is unlikely to resemble that constantly returned to us by mainstream cinema, with its zoo- or anthropomorphic beings and its technical aggregates, the work of Valentin Samarine is, in a way or another, entirely non-figurative and abstract. Valentin Till Maria Samarine-Smirnov (1928) is a representative of Leningrad underground culture, immigrated to France in the early 1980s. His solo photo exhibition Sanki Magic was held in the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. Valentin Samarine was an active participant of the cultural and political life in Leningrad. In 1978, the photographer organized Studio 974, an art gallery in his own apartment. The studio hosted regular exhibitions of Leningrad artists and photographers. An atmosphere of total democracy reigned there. Samarine’s art recorded the key cultural events of the epoch. His photos depicted such significant events, as Andrey Tarkovsky’s burial service in Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Joseph Brodsky’s performances, cross procession in St. Sergey Metochion. Inspired by Choreographic Miniatures by Leonid Yakobson, the photographer was keen on ballet. He took pictures of many theater and ballet performances. But soon, through the pressure of the Soviet authorities, the photographer had to immigrate to France, where he continued his photo experiments. Samarine called his oeuvre Sanki Art. It was a special technique of the new old silver-based photography. Sanki is an ordnance of the old silver-based photography, metamorphoses of energy projections, invisible in the ordinary photo, metaphysics of invisible projections of the Light and the Shadow of the spiritual world of a person, his passions, said the author. The word Sanki was adopted from Sense energetics, a book about Ancient Chinese philosophy. The notion reveals invisible energy potentials of Time and Space, which determine our earthly existence. This special technique enables the master to display the things that are hidden from the viewers in the ordinary photos. Artworks by Samarine are in the collections of Moscow Museum of Modern Art; the Russian Museum; Yaroslavl Art Museum; the Museum of Non-Conformist Art, St-Petersburg; the State Museum of Urban Sculpture...

SoHo Fire Escapes Manhattan 1984 (Soho Manhattan photograph)
Located in NEW YORK, NY
SoHo Fire Escapes, New York, 1984 by Fernando Natalici: The simplicity & grace of iconic New York architecture rendered timeless by the snap of the camera. A window into a street photographer's decisive moment. A window into, not only the New York of 'then', but the hidden poetry of urban architecture... Archival Inkjet Print. Approximately 12 x 18 inches (image size: approx 12 x 17in.). Hand signed from an edition of 20. Obtained directly from artist. Excellent condition. New York based photographer Fernando Natalici is best known for his iconographic documentation of the downtown Manhattan art scene of the mid/late 70's and early 80's. Natalici’s portfolio includes sought after images of a young Patti Smith, Blondie, Talking Heads, Keith Haring, The Ramones and more. As an Art Director, Fernando has played a key role in creating memorable visuals for historic NY venues such as CBGB's, The Mudd Club, Area and Danceteria. Soho Building Architecture, A Brief History The SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District comprises about 500 buildings, many of which are characterized by their cast-iron facades. Development of the district began in the late 18th century. The population surged after the War of 1812, and some homes from this era still remain. The latter half of the 19th century saw the district evolve into a center of commerce and entertainment, and the majority of the cast-iron buildings the district is known for were constructed during this period. The use of cast-iron allowed for ornate facades that were a much cheaper alternative to granite and marble. However, an increase of industrial production along with rising crime and “immorality” steadily drove residents out of the area. The district began to decline in the early 20th century, leaving many spaces vacant for decades and leading some to refer to the area as Hell’s Hundred Acres.

It was not until the late 1960s that artists became attracted to the area because the large, unoccupied loft spaces made affordable studios. Many of those who moved into the area lived in their workspaces, even though it was illegal to do so, and the area was not sufficiently equipped for residential life, lacking basic necessities. At the same time, the entire landscape of SoHo was threatened by plans to build the Lower Manhattan Expressway (LOMEX) - a proposed ten-lane elevated highway that would require the demolition of much of SoHo and Little Italy. Artists in the area collaborated with other preservation advocates in the first, unsuccessful attempt to designate SoHo as a historic district for its architectural significance. Although that failed, they also formed Artists Against the Expressway and ultimately helped defeat the plans for LOMEX, which saved the architecture in the area. The “SoHo Effect” has become a model for repurposing an industrial district for mixed use, both commercial and residential, while preserving much of the existing structural integrity. Today SoHo is known for its unique cast-iron architecture, desirable loft living...

Flower Implosion - black and white contemporary abstract flowers photograph
Located in New York, NY
I began making photograms with alternate light sources in 2020, due to having an unfinished darkroom at the time of the shutdown. (Fortunately, the wet side was nearly complete just prior and I had a ton of old European sized Forte in my paper safe to experiment with). "Into the Ether" was my first in-depth body of cameraless work, which was completed at the end of the year. All of my images are essentially subconscious self-portraits which reveal themselves during my printing processes (that applies to both film-based prints and unique darkroom darkroom prints made without the use of a camera). This award-winning series took shape while in the height of covid-based isolation. However, making the work led to my now current occupation, as I now specialize in experimental photograms and teach some of my processes. "Flower Implosion" was one of my first sparkler exposures involving moving water; Made with flowers and water, this triple exposed sparkler-o-gram debuted via an online exhibition...

Columbine: The Mystery of Five Doves, Layered Images of Flowers in Violet Blue
Located in Kent, CT
This botanical photograph features flowers, butterflies, and doves in an abstracted composition. Shades of violet and blue stand out brightly against the darkened background, and blurred images of butterflies suggest movement in contrast to the still flowers. Edition 2 of 15. Printed on archival Simply Elegant Gold Fiber Paper 310gsm, mounted on Sintra with non-glare plexiglas. Lisa A. Frank’s large-scale photographs are kaleidoscopic multilayered images of the natural world. The work’s complex patterns are composed from the artist’s deep archive of her own photographs; the images are digitally collaged and arranged in patterns that take cues from historic wallpaper designs. Densely ornamental, the work draws upon the artist's background as a textile designer as well as the interior decoration documents of Britain’s Aesthetic...

Black & White Photography "Brutalism -Barbican Centre, London No2", 2019
Located in London, GB
"The Barbican Centre of London photomontages by Hsu show no longer a space of unity and yet, we get lost in it. The carved self-portraits of Hsu are split up. Why do they have multiple faces? It looks like Hsu sees her breaks in the brutalist architecture of the Barbican, this huge complex of concrete and bricks, built in the 1980s, with such steep lines. Are the face we offer to ourself and the face we offer to others united and true? What and where is our real true face?" Alexandra Jaffré
 French Art Historian and author
Belgian-based Art Book Publisher Hsu Yun Chin is a multi-faceted Artist who lives and works in London. Her background is one that has been immersed in various art forms, most predominantly - though not exclusively - in Sculpture and Photography. Mixing this learned process of craftsmanship with a natural affinity, Hsu Yun Chin then seeks to segue initial intrigue and ongoing fascination of the process of creation into various artisan productivity. Beginning with her photographer’s perspective regarding the captured image of the object or still life in question, then exploring into other avenues of expression. The innovation is enhanced and influenced by many factors. These include ‘body sculpture’, religion, culture and philosophy. All of which brings to the fore a distinct narrative and reasoning for a more symbolic and personal body of work. Hsu Yun Chin holds a BA in Fine Art Photography from Emily Carr Art and Design University, Canada and an MA from the Royal College of Art, London. She is also a member of Royal British Society of Sculptors. Her works have been exhibited and published internationally. Measurement: 100X100cm This photograph is sold unframed.
