These are from the 1990s printed at Muse X and never framed. they are unsigned and unnumbered but from a very small edition. they are quite beautiful. Victor Raphael was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1950. He studied art and theater at California State University Northridge and graduated from UCLA. He has exhibited throughout the nation and abroad. In 1996, his work was among the 50 best examples of Polaroid photography included in Polaroid 50: Art and Technology, an international touring exhibition commemorating the company’s 50th anniversary. He works in a wide range of media spanning painting, photography, filmmaking, printmaking, and digital technology. He creates complex and beautiful images that expand conventional views of time and space. For the past three decades, Raphael has produced a unique body of work by merging traditional media such as painting, photography and printmaking with modern electronic media, including video, digital printing and interactive technologies. In addition to his central themes of the exploration of the cosmos and aspects of travel–through space or time–and their visual records, the artist has developed an important body of paintings, in which water, for instance, and its protean and timeless qualities, form an important part. His photography process of digitally manipulating NASA photographs of planets and other natural celestial phenomena into Polaroid prints, and next altering them by hand with metallic paints and gold and metal leaf. Abstract digital print on black/white photo paper 25.5 x 21.5 inches in custom black stained wood frame with black 8 ply mat and AR non glare glass Pairs well with Ref: LU2272395053 These energetic prints are digital copies of original handmade monoprints by photographer Birgit Blyth. Without the use of a camera, the artist produced the original chromoskedasic image by painting with the photographic chemicals directly onto black and white photo pager and exposing it to light. The rich black, faded gold, and crisp white tones are determined by the different chemicals used and the amount of time they are exposed to light. In this piece, Blyth painted gestural, intersecting lines to create a grid-like pattern that falls back in space. About the artist and work: Birgit Blyth is one of our most innovative and prolific photographers who works in a darkroom yet uses no camera! Blyth has been experimenting with a technique known as Chromoskedasic painting since the early ‘90s and variations on this concept have been shown at the gallery for the last 20 years. The unusual process involves the use of silver particles in black and white photographic paper to scatter light at different wavelengths when exposed. A chemist of sorts, Blyth demonstrates a thorough knowledge of how the various photographic chemicals will react when applied to paper and exposed. Each work is unique with palettes that resonate brilliant tonalities of brown, green, black, and purple. Using this technique, Blyth creates abstract crosshatching grids and most recently has developed a more gestural series of 20 x 16 inch chromoskedasic paintings that explores the ethereal qualities made possible by the unconventional material. Birgit Blyth succeeds at keeping her work fresh and cutting-edge using analog methods that are being quickly replaced elsewhere with digital technology. Computers. any error, malfunction, or problem. 3. a brief or sudden interruption or surge in voltage in an electric circuit. STORM is almost the antithesis of what we think of as photography, because the end result does not accurately depict what was viewed from the other side of the lens. Taken with an old BlackBerry Storm smartphone, these images were created from what appeared to be a corruption within the device's operating system. After attempting to take more photos and getting the same results, I frustratingly downloaded hundreds of files only to discover frenetic, vibrant, undulating images. The photographs represented are the last of 28 images that still exist today -- the remaining files having degraded to the point where there is no useful color information left. Making a photograph is a painstaking process occasionally made easier with modern photo editing software. But despite our best efforts, sometimes technology just slips up and has its own way, and in this case an unexplainable computer glitch produced a surprisingly delightful result -- if only for a fleeting moment. From the gallerist: I proudly exhibited Les Schmidt's award-winning photography at my New Orleans gallery for years. His work is in notable collections around the world and his exhibitions are always well received by collectors and the press alike. Over the coming months, I will be listing limited edition prints from his diverse portfolio.
