"Modality No. 11" is a contemporary abstract skyscape, featuring a distinctive blue and white grid filled with various circle geometries. This abstract work comes from Brenda Biondo's "Modalities" series, the third portfolio of the artist's abstraction work based on atmospheric light and color. In her earlier series "Paper Skies" and "Moving Pictures," Brenda Biondo takes printed sky images that have been physically folded and/or cut, and rephotographs them in front of actual sky at different times of day and during different seasons. The result, in turn, is an abstract image that emphasizes the ambiguity between the real and the reproduced. In "Modalities," the artist creates digital montages composed of hundreds of images captured during the creation of "Paper Skies" and "Moving Pictures," engaging in a process of re-imagining and re-contextualizing her previous work. As such, "Modality No. 11" consists of multiple fragments of photographed sky pieced together in a jagged formation, transforming the sky into something else entirely.
The work can be produced in two different ways: as dye sublimation on aluminum, or as an archival pigment print (pricing varies between mediums). Listed prices refer to works produced as prints on paper. Please contact the gallery to discuss additional pricing and options.
Brenda Biondo is a Colorado photographer who uses traditional camera techniques and a formalist aesthetic to explore the perception of high-altitude light and color and their role in the construct of landscape. Her work emphasizes the use of unconventional contexts to create new ways of looking at common subjects, while challenging viewers' perception of color and three-dimensional space. Her interest in atmospheric phenomena and other components of the natural world is built on a foundation of concern for environmental and conservation issues.
Brenda's work has been exhibited throughout the country and published in numerous print and online publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The Denver Post and Lenscratch. Her photographs are held in numerous private and public collections, including those of the Library of Congress, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the Denver Art Museum, the Center for Creative Photography and the San Diego Museum of Art. A solo exhibit of her work opened at the San Diego Museum of Art in 2017.
