About the Item
In Fidel Santos' photograph, Saint Martin I, the artist looks towards a representation of a worn but otherwise stoic figure. The composition focuses exclusively on the saint's head and manicured beard, creating a powerful visual impact.
The saint, reminiscent of the Renaissance period, has an air of resilience in the face of adversity, detached from any specific religious context.
Santos' intentional cropping of the artwork eliminates background distractions, drawing attention solely to the saint. This minimalist approach emphasizes the simplicity and intensity of the emotional experience, making the jubilant celebration the focal point.
Santos' use of color and texture may evoke the classical qualities of Renaissance sculpture, giving the artwork a timeless and elegant feel without explicitly delving into religious themes.
When Martin I became pope in 649, Constantinople was the capital of the Byzantine Empire and the patriarch of Constantinople was the most influential Church leader in the Eastern Christian world. The struggles that existed within the Church at that time were magnified by the close cooperation of the emperor and patriarch.
Fidel Santos is a contemporary artist whose work is profoundly influenced by the rich tapestry of Old Master, Baroque, and Renaissance art. Drawing inspiration from these classical periods, Santos skillfully weaves a visual narrative that transcends time. His artistic repertoire is characterized by a meticulous exploration of iconography and symbolism, echoing the traditions of the past while infusing them with a modern sensibility. Through his art, Santos invites viewers on a journey into the realms of allegory and metaphor, where each stroke is a thoughtful homage to the mastery of bygone eras. Fidel Santos seamlessly blends classical techniques with contemporary perspectives and creates evocative artworks that resonate with historical depth and contemporary relevance.

MASTER ANGEL
Museum sculpture of the master of Mauer
Austrian Danube Region
Around 1500/20
Lime wood, carved full round
Height 55 cm
Provenance:
Hofstätter Collection, Vienna
The masterful sculpture was made in the workshop of the master of the altar of Mauer around 1500 in Lower Austria. It can be located in the context of the Danube school of the first third of the 16th century, was carved from limewood and is 55 cm tall. Since there are no attributes or context, it is an unknown figure of a carved altar.
The master of the altar of Mauer is an anonymous Gothic carver who was active between 1500 and 1525 and received this so-called emergency name through the altar for the parish and pilgrimage church of Mauer near Melk. This winged altar was probably commissioned by Göttweig Abbey in the 1470s and is made of lime wood. It shows an expression in the transition from late Gothic to early Renaissance and is considered the most important carved altar in Lower Austria, created between 1510-15.
The figure presented here is very related in its design to the figures of the altar of Mauer. In lively-moving form, the male figure turns his upper body to the right, with his head pointing upward, probably toward the sky. The right leg in lunge emerges from under the frock...
