The artist has described the series 'Ground Loop' as "more down to earth." In fact, it is more graphic and concentrates on stairs, railings, and other architectural features that are closer to the ground.
Neither street photography nor architectural photography, Matthieu Venot's work is somewhere between figuration and abstraction. In this series, he roams the city looking for buildings with no remarkable features, uncomplicated yet colourful facades. With his camera, he cuts up the urban landscape into square format images where the graphic aspect takes precedence over the architectural one. Composed with the bare minimum (the detail of a wall, balconies, windows…), his photographs are always taken under a cloudless sky, the blue of which offsets the colours (pastel or more acid) of the different buildings and elements.

Matthieu Venot
Focusing his lens on architectural details and adopting fairly constructivist angles, Matthieu Venot succeeds in creating abstract geometric images. Born in Brest in Brittany, he started his photographic work with the desire to reveal his city from a different perspective. He only takes photographs when the weather is incredibly good. The photographer uses the immaculate sky like the background in a studio. Lines cross over and overlap, shapes stand out from this blue background and have us forgetting what we are observing: a roof, a wall, a balcony. “My photographs are full of colour, there’s a beautiful blue sky, so when you look at the picture you feel good. [...] It’s an optimistic vision of reality!”
