Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "I had the good fortune to meet the iconic photographer Albert Watson recently, in Palm Beach, and we talked passionately about inspira- tions and approaches. Albert has long been one of the world’s most acclaimed fashion photographers, but he has no fondness of being pigeonholed – some of his favourite images are from his series of landscape shots taken on assignment in the Isle of Skye. I will always remember his words about that particular assignment. He talked about his fear of being banal and taking “picture postcard images” – after all, Skye is heavily photographed. It was vital, he said, ‘to have imposed himself ” on the landscape rather than the other way around. I left for my latest visit to Rwanda with his comments fresh in my mind. I have learnt in the jungle or rainforest that a photographer cannot let the environment dictate the way to film – that is simply not good enough. To impose oneself in the rain forest habitat of Silverbacks, 10,000 feet up, requires respect and at times, a rather brazen approach. For this portrait I wanted to work with as short a lens as was technically practical. This meant getting as close as possible without incurring the wrath of either the silverback or the lead ranger that is always around the corner. It is not so much a question of breaching rules, as putting oneself in a situation where the distance to the subject can shorten legally. Focus is the key word in photography – it explains, frames and excludes. I am proud of this photograph – it has a calm simplicity which belies the spontaneity of thought that went into its capture. I wanted to take a portrait of a silverback’s body and face, where the detail and sense of intimacy could transcend my earlier work. Albert was so right – I just had to impose myself. At life size, this print really is quite special." -David Yarrow

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "Dian Fossey - the Californian zoologist who became the world’s leading authority on the mountain gorilla - left a formidable legacy when she was tragically murdered in 1985. Her resting place, high up in the rain forest, is visited regularly by those that want to pay homage to her life. Fossey’s famous book ‘Gorillas in the Mist’ chronicled her research and conservation work that helped to reduce the downward population trend in mountain gorillas, ultimately saving them from extinction. Her grave is a two and a half hour walk straight uphill from the little mountain village of Bisate on the edge of the National Park and over the years a well-trodden path has taken shape in what is otherwise a dense and fairly impenetrable rainforest. In all my times trekking through the forest in search of gorillas, I have never had the fortune to be able to use this path to access the gorillas - as quite simply it was too far from the location of any particular troop to be of use. But on this occasion during Covid 19 we were working tightly with the rangers - who advised us that the Umubano Group were near the Fossey trail. It certainly helped the trek to use the path, but far better than that, it transpired that a large Silverback from the Umubano Group - Bunyenyeri, 21 years old - was coming down the...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "If someone else had taken this immersive photograph and asked me which country it had been captured in, Rwanda would be my immediate response. There are mountain gorillas in Uganda and DRC and head on encounters can happen anywhere, but it would take a great deal of persuasion and empirical evidence for me not to regard Rwanda as the odds on favourite location. The number of accessible silverbacks is just so much higher and in my experience the vegetation offers more opportunities for encounters in clearer areas. Cigar shots like this are improbable but not impossible. That is why we keep returning. Most treks are failures for us as we set the bar high, but once in a while it all comes together. Gorilla photography is tough - encounters are intense and normally occur in dense jungle with dappled light and little sense of place. The camera...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "This portrait taken at around 11,000 feet in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda was as hard earned as any portrait I have taken. It can be a slog up the mountain in the rainy season and even when you encounter a silverback, so many variables that are beyond anyone’s control have to work in the favor of the artist. Firstly, I prefer cloud cover, as a strong sun scattering shafts of intense light through the canopy of the rainforest is not a good bedfellow for portraiture. Secondly, I always prefer some degree of room to work with and 50% of my trips up that hill have not given me that opportunity - the vegetation is just too dense - on the ground and above. I do need some light to play with to help my depth of focus. Thirdly, the silverback has to play ball - and that is not easy - in my experience the earlier the encounter in the day, the greater the opportunity of meeting an alert and compliant gorilla. This is the son of Kwitonda - a famous silverback who passed away recently and it is this son who is now the Governor...
