About the Item

Audrey Hepburn smiling, portrait by Douglas Kirkland. All prints are limited edition. Available in multiple sizes. High-end framing on request. All prints are done and signed by the artist. The collector receives an additional certificate of authenticity from the gallery. Douglas Kirkland photographed Audrey Hepburn primarily during the 1960s and 1970s, creating a series of portraits that captured her elegance and understated beauty. Unlike his well-known, sensual session with Marilyn Monroe, Kirkland’s images of Hepburn are softer and more reserved, reflecting her sophisticated and private persona. He used simple compositions and controlled lighting to focus on her expressive face and distinctive features rather than elaborate styling or sets. These portraits have been featured in books and exhibitions, and they are often cited as examples of Kirkland’s ability to adapt his photographic style to suit the personality and character of his subject. Douglas Kirkland, born in Toronto, Canada in 1934, began his career at age 24 as a staff photographer for Look magazine. In 1961, he was commissioned to photograph Marilyn Monroe for the magazine’s 25th-anniversary issue. The resulting series, later known as One Night with Marilyn, brought him immediate international recognition. He went on to work for Life magazine, traveling as a photojournalist to countries such as Greece, Lebanon, and Japan. Over his decades-long career, Kirkland photographed numerous cultural icons—including Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, and Coco Chanel—and documented the making of more than 100 major films, including Titanic, Moulin Rouge, and The Great Gatsby. Regarded as one of Hollywood’s defining photographers, his work has been exhibited worldwide and is part of permanent collections in institutions such as the Smithsonian and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Douglas Kirkland passed away on October 2, 2022, at the age of 88.
