About the Item

After Eadweard Muybridge — Black-and-White Heliogravure “Female Nude Rising from Bed,” Electa Editrice Portfolio (Milan, 1981/82) — Framed From the limited Electa Editrice Portfolio devoted to Eadweard Muybridge, issued in Milan, 1981/82, in an edition of 1,000 copies. Each sheet is a fine héliogravure (photogravure) on specially developed paper, reproducing Muybridge’s pioneering late-19th-century motion studies. This plate depicts a female nude rising from a bed, arranged in sequential frames across two horizontal registers. The imagery was originally photographed by Muybridge circa 1884–1887, during his landmark Animal Locomotion studies at the University of Pennsylvania, which analyzed the dynamics of the human body in motion. Clarity note: This print is after Eadweard Muybridge (20th-century photogravure from the Electa portfolio), not a 19th-century original print. Sheet approx. 41 × 30.8 cm (11.5 × 15.5 in). Presented framed in a simple black frame with conservation mat. Condition: very good, with only minor toning consistent with age. Details Attribution: after Eadweard Muybridge Portfolio: Electa Editrice, Milan Year of portfolio: 1981/82 Year of original photograph: c. 1884–1887 (Animal Locomotion, University of Pennsylvania) Edition: 1,000 Technique: Héliogravure / photogravure on special paper Sheet size: 41 × 30.8 cm / 11.5 × 15.5 in Framed: Yes (black frame; ready to hang) Condition: Very good; crisp image; light toning; minor frame wear. Eadweard Muybridge (1830–1904) was a pioneering English photographer whose experiments with sequential photography revolutionized the understanding of motion. Initially renowned for his panoramic views of the American West, Muybridge became world-famous for his motion studies, begun in the 1870s and culminating in the monumental Animal Locomotion series (1884–1887). Commissioned by the University of Pennsylvania, these studies used multiple cameras to capture human and animal movement in unprecedented detail. Muybridge’s work profoundly influenced artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Francis Bacon, the Futurists, and the Cubists, as well as the early development of cinema through his invention of the zoopraxiscope (1879). Today, he is recognized as one of the key figures bridging photography, science, and modern art.
