About the Item
Dirk Bogarde had, by the time Jack Robinson photographed him on January 17, 1968, survived a long period as the pin-up idol of postwar British cinema to become recognized as an outstanding actor in films such as Victim (1961), Darling (1965) with Julie Christie, Accident (1967), and Our Mother’s House (1967). Most of Bogarde's best and most serious roles came after Victim, the film in which he first stretched himself as an actor. He received the first of his six nominations as Best Actor from the British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) for the film. Bogarde would later develop his writing talent to produce a number of autobiographical books, while still making distinguished appearances in films, mainly for European directors such as Luchino Visconti, Alain Resnais, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Bertrand Tavernier.
