About the Item
The old teacher. When he was young tango was the Argentine dance. Born in the back streets and brothels of Buenos Aires its staccato movements and deep rooted passion were all-consuming. With the advent of military dictatorships, bent on conservatism and built on repression, the dance of the bordello all but disappeared – surviving in the Milonga private members clubs hidden from view. When democracy returned the dance became a symbol of the country's renaissance, revered as a totem of their nation by the youth and the old masters became guides to a new generation.
This striking black-and-white photograph captures the timeless intimacy of a dance between two figures, illuminated in soft, ambient light. The old man, adorned with a hat, exudes a classic charm, while the closely embraced young female partner gazes with an expression of focused intent. The blurred background silhouettes further enhance the central duo, suggesting a sense of motion and fluidity. Their posture and frame encapsulate the essence of the harmonic connection so central to tango dancing, resonating with grace and elegance. The stark contrast and meticulous composition emphasize the emotional depth of the moment, drawing attention to the delicate interplay of light and shadow. This artwork uniquely immortalizes the art and history of tango dance, showcasing its ability to convey profound emotion and connection beyond words.
James Sparshatt's photographs of music and dance capture the emotion and intensity of people lost in the rhythm of the moment.
Palladium platinum prints are the choice for serious collectors of black and white photography. Platinum prints are the ultimate expression of bespoke craft printing. In the hands of a master printer they can provide a unique register of tones and effects bringing unexpected nuances from a negative. Prints created in this way have an ethereal quality with incredible detail, enhanced by the way the chemicals soak into the fibres of the paper. They are also light fast and therefore not subject to any form of fading over time. James Sparshatt's platinum prints are produced by 31 Studio, Europe's leading exponents of this art.
The work is also available as a baryta silver gelatin print or as a large scale archival print.

Both there, and later in Cuba, I was captivated by the energy and exuberance of the festivals and dance so inherent in Latino life. Many of my images celebrate the rich and vibrant musical heritage of Havana, Buenos Aires and Seville. When I look at them I recall the rhythmic beat of the music and almost feel a trickle of sweat running down my back.” His exhibition at the Royal National Theatre, London was described in the Sunday Telegraph as “a dazzling collection of black and white images”. James has been a finalist in the Sony World Photographic awards, the Centre for Fine Art Photography and The Worldwide Photography Gala awards. He has also won the Center for Fine Art Photography’s International award. James frequently gives talks about his work at photographic festivals and exhibitions.

Jonathan Becker
(Steven Kasher Gallery bio by Mark Rozzo)
Literate flair, acute visual intuition, love of mischief and spontaneity, and global wanderlust: These are among the hallmarks of the work of Jonathan Becker, whose photography spans four decades and includes iconic portraits (often for Vanity Fair) of a multiplicity of subjects, including Robert Mapplethorpe, Martha Graham, Madonna, Elia Kazan, Prince Charles, Eudora Welty, André Leon Talley, Ai Weiwei, Diana Vreeland and Jack Kevorkian.
Becker - whose work was first published in Andy Warhol’s Interview in 1973 - was born in 1954 and raised in New York City. In the mid-1970s, he moved for a year to Paris, where he was mentored by his hero, Brassaï. Upon return to New York, Becker drove a cab, toting his camera and parking to complete magazine assignments. A 1981 exhibition of Becker’s work at New York’s Rentschler Gallery included a series of arresting images of patrons taken inside the kitchen at Elaine’s, the storied hangout on New York’s Upper East Side. This exhibition, curated by art director Bea Feitler brought Becker to the attention of Frank Zachary, editor-in-chief of Town & Country. Zachary invited Becker to work for the magazine, where the young photographer further developed his passion for journalistic portraiture alongside Slim Aarons, who, after Brassaï, became Becker’s guiding light.
Becker was then enlisted by Bea Feitler to contribute portraits to the prototype of Vanity Fair’s 1983 re-launch. His participation led to a highly prolific association with the magazine as Contributing Photographer, continuing to this day. Becker has also contributed portraits and reportage to The New Yorker, Vogue, W, The Paris Review, amongst truly most major publications. In complement to his editorial work, Becker has accepted a limited number of private and family portrait commissions each year, some accompanied by privately published books, and in the course of his three-years-long project for the Rockefeller Foundation, Becker documented its vast array of philanthropic grant recipients on four continents abroad.
Six trade books comprised entirely of Becker’s photographs have been published including Bright Young Things...
