About the Item

No Edition Signed in black ink on print margin by Jesse Alexander Gelatin silver print Paper size: 14 x 11 in. Image size: 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. "Soon-to-be World Champion Phil Hill is in his first Grand Prix drive for Ferrari. The car is a single seater Formula Two machine, and he is seen rushing downhill through the infamous "Fuchsröhre" section of the Ring. The image is unusual for several reasons: it was taken with a Rolleiflex camera, hardly considered the best tool for action; and the action has been captured at the precise moment that the rear wheel is passing the arm of the photographer in the foreground, a totally accidental element." -Caption from Driven: The racing photography of Jesse Alexander 1954-1962 ________________________ Jesse Alexander was considered one of the greatest race car photographers in history. His images of vintage automobiles and the people who gave them life; captured from the European race circuit during the 1950’s and 60’s are collected and exhibited by museums and galleries throughout the world. Jesse Alexander was involved in photography and especially motorsports photography since the early 1950s when he covered the original Mexican Road Race. He then spent many years in Europe covering Formula One and the famous long distance sports car races, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio. In that period of time he also photographed theater and music personalities for the New York Times. His work is held by numerous private collectors and has been exhibited in museums in the United States, including the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Akron Museum and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. “As a young boy growing up during World War II, I was captivated by the imagery that came out of the war through the eyes of legendary photographers like Edward Steichen and W. Eugene Smith. My other heroes include Henri Cartier Bresson, Jacques Lartigue, Mary Ellen Mark, Bruce Davidson and Robert Capa.”
