John Kenny 1
Over the last decade John Kenny has travelled to some of the remotest corners of sub-Saharan Africa to highlight the pivotal role that traditional communities play in places where the earth’s resources are minimal and under growing threat. His striking portraits emphasize beauty and inherent strength as well as giving us insight into traditional dress and adornment. John has also extended this work to document ethnic groups in India. His work is exhibited worldwide through art fairs and has been featured in many periodicals and newspapers including interviews in Professional Photographer, Eyes In Magazine, Digital Photographer, Black and White Photography, Tribal Art Magazine, Go Magazine among many more. John actively supports organisations that work within traditional African communities and from this he has been a guest speaker on BBC Radio 4 and at the London International Documentary Festival. John regularly donates works in support of charities such as Survival international and Concern Worldwide.

Himba Child l by John Kenny. Portrait, Unmounted C-type Print, 2010
Located in Coltishall, GB
In the far north of Namibia as you head towards the border with Angola at Epupa Falls, barely visible tracks radiate off the main dirt road into bush and disappear across sandy, dry river beds. Arid conditions and past hunting have left few animals and the barren terrain create few obvious landmarks, but the Himba are able to navigate easily.
Himba villages have a circular boundary around the kraal (village) staked out by tall, tightly packed branches and a single route in and out. The outer wall surrounds a number of huts, each inhabited by one of the man’s wives and her children. Sometimes there are 6, 7 or more wives in the Himba kraal, and a lot of children!
When they are young, Himba children of both sexes dress and look remarkably similar. Often the only way to differentiate is by the number of thick hair strands...

Young Hamer Girl, Ethiopia
By Christian Witkin
Located in Vienna, AT
„Inspired by the fascinating peoples of southern Ethiopia I decided to travel deep into this beautiful country and experience the rural tribes in the flesh.
I have always been fascinated by 18th and 19th century ethnographic sketches and brilliant black and white anthropological photography in far away countries. As a curious individual I want to submerge myself in different cultures, sights and...
