About the Item

Marcel Duchamp Poster within Poster, 1963 Poster 34 1/2 x 27 inches Provenance Estate of Carolyn Brown, New York 2025. Born in Blainville, Normandy, Duchamp hailed from a family with artistic and legal backgrounds, being the son of a notary and the younger sibling of painter Jacques Villon and Cubist sculptor Raymond Duchamp-Villon. He attended the Académie Julian between 1904 and 1905. Early on, his figure paintings drew inspiration from Matisse and Fauvism, but in 1911, he developed a unique approach to Cubism characterized by earthy tones, mechanical and visceral shapes, and a portrayal of movement that drew from both Futurism and Cubism. His work, Nude Descending a Staircase, No.2, created a stir at the 1913 New York Armory Show. After 1912, Duchamp significantly reduced his painting output, producing his first 'readymades' in 1913. These were commonplace items, often altered slightly, that he designated as art. His initial readymades included Bicycle Wheel (1913), featuring a wheel on a wooden stool, and a snow shovel named In Advance of the Broken Arm (1915). A notable piece of his is a urinal called Fountain, signed 'R. Mutt', submitted to the Society of Independent Artists exhibition in New York in 1917. The resulting debate linked the readymade concept to a challenge against traditional views of art's essence and status. Duchamp also viewed readymades as elements of a personal symbolic language, mentioning that using prefabricated items liberated him from the constraints of developing a specific style or aesthetic. Duchamp primarily resided in New York from 1915 until 1923, then in Paris from 1923 to 1942, returning to New York in 1942. His friendship with Man Ray resulted in the 1921 publication of New York Dada. Between 1915 and 1923, he concentrated on The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass), which he regarded as his most significant work. It was presented at the International Exhibition of Modern Art at the Brooklyn Museum in 1927 but suffered severe damage during its return trip. In 1936, Duchamp repaired and partially recreated it, and it is currently housed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Duchamp remained a pivotal figure in the art scene, maintaining an interest in experimental cinema and continuing to organize exhibitions such as the Exposition Internationale du Surréalisme in Paris in 1938. He also dedicated considerable time to competitive chess. His first solo exhibition took place at the Arts Club of Chicago in 1937. He passed away in Neuilly on the fringes of Paris.
