About the Item

"Men At Work" is one of 36 featured works which make up the series Above & Beyond. This homage to New York City is an evocative tribute to Peter Liepke's adopted home town, the urban metropolis he chose over his native Minnesota. This is not just another group of photographs of obvious NYC landmarks in Manhattan. When the artist chooses to include an iconic structure, he presents a startling perspective, literally and figuratively. This ongoing portfolio is especially noteworthy for being inclusive of all five boroughs. By depicting scenes from everyday life that emphasize the human aspects of city life, the artist taps into our collective psyches for memorable moments personally experienced in the City that never sleeps. “For this series I wanted to go back and attempt to remember my feelings or first impressions upon arriving in New York City as an outsider for the first time, well over twenty years ago,” Liepke explains. But rather than the traditional love letter to the city, “the series is much more about breaking away and chasing a dream.” Each work, a misty scene of everyday life framed by iconic architecture, pulsates with nostalgia, and like the vintage processes employed, radiates with timelessness. In order to capture the quintessential feeling of seeing New York City for the first time, Liepke works in the moment, never staging his works or the passersbys who enter his vantage point. He will sit in one spot for hours on end, until he can take the perfect shot. Once he’s taken a photograph, Liepke then combines both platinum/palladium and gum bichromate processes to realize his works. “In our digital age of rapid fire cameras and gigabytes I believe my methodology and approach projects my contemporary vision forward, while at the same time celebrating the roots of photography in its purest form,” the artist explains in a statement about his work. “Maybe my visual philosophy contradicts the medium of photography itself,” Liepke has said. “But if we don’t hold true to our own vision, then why bother doing it?” Gallery 270 represents distinguished photographers of the 20th Century and the emergent photographers of the 21st Century from around the world. We place particular emphasis on modern emerging photographers employing traditional processes such as platinum/palladium, cyanotype, and gum bichromate, where the hand of the artist is much more intimately engaged.
