Born in 1950, American photographer Shelby Lee Adams is mainly known for documenting the people, culture and poverty of the Appalachian Mountains. This work was published in three monographs: Appalachian Portraits (1993), Appalachian Legacy (1998), and Appalachian Lives (2003). His poignant photographs are included in the permanent collections of Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C, the Harvard Fogg Museum, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
