About the Item
China - Manipulated photography.
A series of photographs manipulated with oil paint in which the artist Wei Chiang shows us different aspects of life in China, some of them surprising from a Western point of view. These are unique pieces developed with a refined technique that the artist has been refining over the years.
Wei Xiang - Photography
Wei Xiang's interest in photography began when he was at university, and his photographic works often have characteristics of paintings. Wei Xiang joined the Hungarian Photographers' Association in 2013 and was elected as executive director in 2019. In recent years, Wei Xiang has been continuously experimenting by directly using oil paint on printed photographs for a second round of artistic creation, forming his unique mixed-media style that combines photography with painting. In 2019, Wei Xiang was invited to participate in the third Lishui International Photographic Art Seminar. During the seminar, his lecture on "Photography-Pictorial Art" was well received by industry colleagues, and his work was included in the book "Technological Changes and Artistic Contextual Changes in Photography since its Birth 180 Years Ago", edited and published by the China Photographers Association. In 2022, the Hungarian Photographers' Association organised a mixed media art exhibition entitled "Painting and Photography" in Budapest in his honour. Peter Baki, the president of the Hungarian Photographers' Association, said at the opening ceremony of the exhibition: "Wei Xiang has built a bridge between photography and painting, bridging the gap between the two art forms"

Allan Tannenbaum's career in photography spans more than four decades. Born in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1945, he received a B.A. in Art from Rutgers University in 1967, where he photographed for The Targum – the campus newspaper – and made films for his art courses. In 1973, when the SoHo Weekly News commenced publication, Tannenbaum became the Photo Editor and Chief Photographer. Tannenbaum has also done documentary and feature photography in places like Thailand, Indonesia, Palau, Jordan, Bahrain, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Brazil, Israel, Iceland, and Mexico. He has covered numerous political campaigns, nominating conventions and news stories in the U.S. such as the Oklahoma City bombing and the Columbine massacre. His work has appeared in many photo books and exhibitions, as well as appearing regularly in NEWSWEEK, TIME, LIFE, ROLLING STONE, PARIS MATCH, and STERN. His photographs have graced the covers of TIME three times, and NEWSWEEK five times. He now works as an international photojournalist contributing to various noted publications including Time, Life, and Newsweek.
