This is an archival pigment print depicting an abstracted still life printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308 gsm by artist Paul Cava. It is from the "Table Top" series, which is one of three series, along with his "Still Life" and his "Flora" series, making up a larger body of work produced between the years 2019-2021. The leading actor in this three-part drama is the late afternoon light with the supporting cast being the objects of his attention -- a deer antler, a dying flower, plaster casts of his daughter’s hand and foot, the various vessels and forms in relation to each other as the light moves across their surfaces. The elephant in the room for the latter work is the lockdown mood that intensifies and thickens the air in these still lifes. Image size is approx. 14 1/2 x 11” printed on 19 x 13” sheets, edition of 10. Also available as image size approx. 19 x 14 1/4” printed on 22 x 17” sheets, edition of 5 ($2,500) - listed separately. Signed, titled, dated and numbered lower margin.
Brooklyn-born artist Paul Cava began his career as an artist in the late 1960's. Cava made his first explorations as a poet, multi-media artist, filmmaker, photographer and painter. He finally settled in the last three decades on a hybrid form of expression that synthesized his previous efforts and anticipated the current digital use of photography by combining photographs, words, collage, drawing, painting, and printmaking into his own visual language, the core of which is a personal visual poetry.
Cava has exhibited paintings, drawings and photo-based works from 1976 to the present in galleries and museums in the United States and Europe. His work has been collected by a broad range of private and public institutions, including The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Princeton University Museum of Art, and The Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. His work has been featured in many publications including "Eyemazing Magazine" and "Das Magazin." Cava was a recipient of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts grants in 1981 and 1999. In 2005, the German publisher Edition Galerie Vevais released "Walt Whitman and Paul Cava / Children of Adam," a deluxe volume of Cava’s photo-based art and Walt Whitman’s poetry. In his Magnetic radiation series, Janiak reveals the hidden world of magnetism by photographing ferrofluids. A ferrofluid is a liquid substance magnetized through the introduction of iron particles. Janiak introduced magnetic forces to the ferrofluid, moving the magnets into different configurations to cause the colloidal mixture to assume various forms that reveal the otherwise invisible nature of magnetic activity. The forms reveal ancient forces, those that shaped the universe at its beginning.
Seb Janiak is a photographic artist whose work explores conditions in which opposites can co-exist, revealing the visual characteristics of the hidden forces that shape the physical universe. He creates images that blend science with creativity, analytics with the poetic. He lives and works in Paris, France.
Janiak began his career as a graphic designer. While freelancing, he engaged with state-of-the-art technology, becoming a pioneer in the field of digital photography. His work gained him global attention, and he expanded into music video directing, fashion photography, and finally into fine art. Since 2009, he has focused on expanding the potential of contemporary analogue photography.
Technique
Since 2009, Janiak has only used basic photographic tools. He says, “I only allow myself the techniques which have been used in analogue photography since 1850. In his Résonance series, Janiak explores the role of sound in creation. Taking inspiration from sacred texts from multiple spiritual traditions, he points to a recurring idea that sounds, or words, were the initial source of the energy that shaped the universe. To examine the shape of sound, Janiak illuminated water then vibrated it using different sound frequencies. Each frequency has a particular effect on the water, manifesting shapes, forms and patterns that would otherwise be invisible to the eye.

Color photography evokes emotion that can bring a viewer into the scene. It can transport one to faraway places or back into the past.
The first color photograph, taken in 1861, was more of an exercise in science than art. Photographer Thomas Sutton and physicist James Clerk Maxwell used three separate exposures of a tartan ribbon — filtered through red, green and blue — and composited them into a single image, resulting in the first multicolor representation of an object.
Before this innovation, photographs were often tinted by hand. By the 1890s, color photography processes were introduced based on that 1860s experiment. In the early 20th century, autochromes brought color photography to a commercial audience.
Now color photography is widely available, with these historic photographs documenting moments and scenes that are still vivid generations later. Photographers in the 20th and 21st centuries have offered new perspectives in the evolving field of modern color photography with gripping portraiture, snow-capped landscapes, stunning architecture and lots more.
