About the Item
This one was, surprisingly, taken in a park a short drive from my house. I come to this cute spot often to look for promising shots of trees, and this strange-looking figure remains one of my favorite images ever. I don’t know what happened here — either it split apart at some point, or perhaps a lightning strike burned out the middle, but those roots run deep, and this tree is not deterred easily. It seems to be raising its foliaged arms up at the sky, maybe in spite, or maybe even in gratitude for having a chance to stand apart from all the rest. To prove how strong it is. The name reflects the legend by Washington Irving, but perhaps it is a step away from the violent elements we tend to associate the most with. Even at night, the tree hollow tells a story, but what could it be, I wonder?
