Gered Mankowitz
Jimi Hendrix Blue Smoke, 1967

1967

About the Item

MANKOWITZ SHOT THE ICONIC SHOT OF HENDRIX 1967 AT MASON’S YARD. AFTER SHOOTING THE ROLLING STONES ALBUM COVERS - BRIAN JONES BROUGHT OVER JIMI TO WORK ON HIS LOOK. THE THREE “BOYS” SMOKED A LOT OF WEED - WENT SHOPPING AT PICCADILLY CIRCUS AND FOUND THIS MILITARY JACKET. GERED MENTIONED - THE HARDEST PART OF SHOOTING JIMI THIS DAY WAS HE COULDN’T STOP LAUGHING, SO TO GET “THE LOOK” WAS A BIT TOUGH. THE REST IS HISTORY. At the age of 15, Gered Mankowitz left school and embarked upon what would become a highly successful photography career, meeting and shooting some of the most iconic actors, personalities, and musicians of the 20th century. The brilliant and beloved late actor and comedian Peter Sellers encouraged Mankowitz to pursue photography. After cutting his teeth as an apprentice in the studios of some of London’s top photographers and taking on early commissions for fashion companies, Mankowitz set up his own studio and soon found himself where he belonged: the music industry. His sitters have included Marianne Faithfull, Jimi Hendrix, Duran Duran, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones, who he met and toured with at the beginning of their rise to super-stardom. In addition to teaching, mounting exhibitions, and working for magazines and other clients, Mankowitz continues to document musicians.

  • At Home With Keith, West Sussex 1966
    By Gered Mankowitz
    Located in Beverly Hills, CA
British rock star Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones. Photographed in his home called Redlands in West Wittering in West Sussex. Gered Mankowitz on the shoot: "By 1966, The Stones' position as rock gods was established. They were making serious money and splashing out on new homes and cars. I had an enjoyable day down there with him. It was a high degree of refurbishing chaos! Keith was in a Lord of the Manor frame of mind with a horse and paddock and a small rowboat on the moat and his collection of antique weapons...

  • George III Marble and Blue John Dolphin Tazza
    By Sir William Chambers
    Located in New Orleans, LA
This important George III tazza is attributed to famed Scottish-Swedish architect Sir William Chambers. The magnificent piece features a base carved from statuary marble in the shape of a stylized dolphin, which relates to Chambers' extraordinary 18th-century architectural designs. A marvel of beauty and craftsmanship, the tazza is also inset with specimens of Derbyshire Blue John in both the plinth and bowl. Blue John is one of the most in-demand decorative stones in the world, and its inclusion in this piece elevates the tazza to a true Georgian masterpiece. Due to its popularity, the largest veins of Blue John had disappeared by the early 19th century, and only a small amount of the stone remains today. Because of its scarcity, most examples of Blue John furniture feature only small inset veneers. By contrast, this rare tazza features not one, but two substantial specimens of the stone. It represents some of the last ornamental wares created of such grand size and proportion, though other smaller examples still grace the stately British estates of Chatsworth, Hardwick, Kedleston and Haddon, among others. Not only does this tazza boast a highly rare material, but it was also designed by one of the most important architects and designers of the Georgian era. Sir William Chambers was a Scottish-Swedish architect based in London who was active during the reigns of Kings George II and George III. Celebrated for his combination of English Palladianism...
