In the making of this work Jo Ann Chaus enters a dream like state of mental suspension, where a stew of memories and references have simmered in her subconscious for years yields this body of work.
By draping her body with remnants of her past in powerful light she conjures up a character that is the past and the present simultaneously. She represents a woman, or any non-gender specific person, who with quiet defiance, dares to allow the conscious and subconscious to meet, and express her inward looking in a strong yet matter of fact way.
The work is an homage to and for women who past and present endured and surrendered to the weight and responsibilities carried as wives and mothers, traditional female roles, sacrificing personal desires and aspirations and unrealized potential.
With tenacity and will, her exquisite state of imbalance is to be considered.
