Please note that prices increase as editions sell. Michael Massaia writes: “In my early twenties I worked in a mailroom, and as a street messenger in New York City. I would wander the streets for days at a time, both confused and mesmerized by almost everything that came in front of my eyes. Carrying around an old Polaroid sx-70 camera, and boxes of Time-Zero film, I found the perfect tool to document both the romance, excitement and confusion of the city during the early 2000s. The city was right on the brink of undergoing massive changes both esthetically and culturally. These photos were in retrospect a love letter, as well as a goodbye letter, to a city that would in many ways be unrecognizable 20 years later. “All of the images were shot using an old chrome Polaroid sx-70 camera & expired Time-Zero film. All of the manipulations are done by hand using wood carving tools on the original time-zero positive. The final prints are 10”x10”, 20”x20” and 40”x40” pigment prints.” - - - Michael Massaia is a fine art photographer and printmaker who has spent the past ten years documenting areas and objects that never extend too far from his front door. Isolation, disconnection, and an attempt to put a spotlight on the ordinary are the constants in all of his work. He focuses primarily on large format black-and-white film, utilizing a variety of highly modified proprietary analog and digital printing techniques. Massaia works alone and is the sole craftsman from the instant the negative is exposed to the moment the final print is made.

This is a 39.5 x 59 inches archival giclée black and white print on archival exhibition paper. It is part of a limited edition of 6 plus 2 AP. Signed and numbered in the back. An edition of 10 and an edition of 20, smaller in size, are also available. This photograph is part of J. L. Fievet’s CV series, shot during the early months of 2020, during which New York City was in total lock down because of the Covid-19 emergency. Fievet spent day in and day out roaming the streets, documenting the breathtaking change that transformed the city. Fievet’s iconic photographs tried to seize the stark contrast between the surreal aspect of NYC empty streets with the resiliance of New Yorkers who kept pursuing normalcy within a unique situation. This photograph shows a deserted West Broadway...
