About the Item

This contemporary fine art still life minimalist photograph “Le French Croissant” was captured by French artist and photographer Natalya Mougenot, and belongs to her ongoing series dedicated to the beauty of life’s simple things. In this series, the artist transforms ordinary moments into timeless reflections, reminding us that art often lives in the quiet details of everyday rituals. For Natalya, the croissant is more than just a pastry—it is an emblem of France, a cultural icon, and a poetic symbol of her long-standing connection to her adopted country. Having moved to France nearly three decades ago, she continues to be fascinated by French lifestyle and cuisine, which she seeks to honor through her lens. “I love capturing what may seem like Parisian clichés—a croissant, a coffee, a café table,” she reflects, “because for me they embody the very essence of France, and I am still amazed by their beauty after all these years.” Beyond its visual simplicity, this photograph carries a deeper invitation: to cherish the present moment. As the artist explains, “This is not just a photo of a croissant and a cup of coffee—it is a gentle reminder of the importance of pausing, of giving value to each second. A simple breakfast becomes a moment of meditation, a space to breathe before the day begins.” Natalya’s practice is grounded in authenticity and spontaneity. She never stages her images; instead, she allows life itself to compose the scene. “My photography is about the present moment—the way I live it, feel it, and share it. Authenticity is essential: what I see and what I express must be true, because people will always sense when something is false.” What I wish to express in all my photographs is the truth of the moment — unembellished, unforced. Just life as it is, and the importance of cherishing each fleeting fragment of it.” This photo can be displayed in any space dedicated to contemporary still life, minimalist and realist photography, as well as in spaces celebrating slow living, everyday rituals, and the poetry of simplicity. In “Le French Croissant,” the everyday becomes universal. The croissant, iconic in its Frenchness, emerges as a metaphor for tradition, comfort, and the beauty hidden within small pleasures. Natalya’s photograph invites us to slow down, to honor life’s details, and to find serenity in what is often overlooked. About the Artist: Originally from Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, and now based in Lyon, France, Natalya Mougenot has spent over two decades refining her artistic voice. Her multicultural background and personal experience inform her bold, expressive works, which have found homes in private collections around the world. Natalya’s distinctive visual language blends Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism, Art Naïf, and Art Brut—resulting in paintings that are raw, instinctive, and emotionally resonant. Across her work, three values guide her: authenticity, sincerity, and honesty. “Authenticity is everything,” she says. “People can always feel when something is real—or when it’s not. I want my work to be honest, to come from a place that’s true.” In addition to painting, Natalya is also a passionate photographer. Her photographic work—also featured on this platform—mirrors her painterly sensibility: a poetic, observational approach that captures the quiet power of everyday life. For her, photography is both inspiration and a form of presence, often serving as visual sketches for future paintings or existing as standalone works.
